JP Chickadee Project - MULTIPLE OPENINGS

  • Field work that works directly with our local population of color-banded birds
  • Assist with feeder and nest box monitoring and maintenance
  • Periodically participate in capture and banding of birds
  • Possibility to design and participate in independent research.
  • Summer, Fall, and Winter "for-credit" options available - 4-8 hours per week depending on interest

Thornicroft's Giraffe Population Dynamics - MULTIPLE OPENINGS

  • Work with a team of other researchers to identify and organize photos of individual giraffes
  • Gain valuable experience with database construction, management, and structure
  • Contribute to ongoing research focused on population estimates, social affiliations, demography, etc.
  • Work as part of a multi-national conservation team, having real impacts on giraffe conservation
  • Summer, Fall, and Winter "for-credit" options available - 4-8 hours per week depending on interest

Avian Foraging Response to Plant Volatile Organic Compounds - MULTIPLE OPENINGS

  • Join a novel project with both field and lab components (avian foraging & organic compound assays)
  • Would prefer experience with field ornithological techniques, but will train right students for this component
  • Experience with GC/Mass Spec preferred for students interested in this component
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary research team
  • Summer "for-credit" option available - 4-8 hours per week depending on interest

Vertebrate Museum Studies - MULTIPLE OPENINGS

  • Learn techniques for preparing avian specimens for museum skins and skeletons
  • Gain training in database management and workflow organization
  • Become an expert with avian anatomical features, as well as their ecology and evolution
  • Work closely with other students in avian and mammal collections
  • Gain valuable experience with archival techniques, including those associated with genetic resources
  • Fall and Winter "for-credit" options available - 4-8 hours per week, depending on interest

Loon Conservation Genetics - MULTIPLE OPENINGS (1-2)

  • Become proficient with basic molecular genetic techniques
  • Gain training in statistical analysis of time series data from a 30-year dataset
  • Work with on an iconic species of the northwoods
  • Fall and Winter "for-credit" options available - 4-8 hours per week, depending on interest

In general, designing research projects around ongoing work is the most productive, but in the past we have had some success when students come with their own ideas.
