About
The Department of Zoology, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, was established in 2002 as a part of the B.Sc. General programme in Biological Sciences. with Dr. Sujit Kumar Dutta as the first Head of the Department.
The Department which started in the old building, shifted to the wing of the newly constructed building in 2013 with a 192 sq. ft. area. After the completion of all three wings of the College Building, the department was again shifted and finally found its place in the middle wing of the College. Two new laboratories were set up spanning room 207 and 208 with modern facilities under the abled supervision of Dr. Arunachal Chatterjee, the Head of the Department since April, 2017.
The Department of Zoology has recently set-up a separate laboratory facility for biochemistry practical where the other room has set-up with research equipment’s for molecular biology and cell biology research.
The future seems to hold a lot of promise as from the session 2024-25, the University of Calcutta has approved the 4-year B.Sc. Honours with Research Programme in Zoology, which has already started attracting students in large numbers.

Uniqueness:
A spacious department having Teachers’ room, storing cum laboratory attendant sitting room and two laboratories. Out of the two laboratories one is ICT enabled (Room 208) for imparting better, detailed and picturesque illustration of the academic/curricular topics to the students.
One laboratory (Room 207) is equipped with modern biochemistry practical facilities.
Two well-furnished animal specimen museums having a diverse collection of animal species from different phyla, skeletal structures providing the students an opportunity to know about the animal kingdom through a visionary learning and understanding of the different animal species.

A departmental Seminar Library for the students with a good collection of books to read and borrow and to enrich themselves with the academic/curricular topics to enhance their subject concepts and depth.
The instruments present in the spacious departmental laboratories are – Binocular microscope, Simple and Compound microscopes with light attachments, pH meter, Weighing Balance, Incubator, Water bath, Swing out Centrifuge, fixed angle rotor Centrifuge, Homogenizer, Power pack, Protein Gel Electrophoresis apparatus (SDS-PAGE), Magnetic stirrer with hot plate, Vortex, Colorimeter, Histological staining apparatus, Instruments for Ecological experiments, PST multi water parameter tester, GPS. Demonstration and illustration of practical academic/curricular topics to the students are done using all these instruments which provides the students with a hand-on experience in the operation of the instruments.
Educational tours, as cocurricular activity, are conducted by the department for the exposure of students to the diverse animal species and their ecological habitats in nature.
Department also participates in several extra-curricular activities such as awareness programmes, rally, publishing departmental Wall-Magazine, organizing Inter departmental Quiz competitions among the students to help them imbibe knowledge on the subject and widen their spectrum of knowledge and thinking.

The Department has an Animal Museum which is a repository to many rare species. It is one of the very enriching heritage of our college resources which captivates the attention and interest of all.

Study materials along with books and link of open educational resources (OER) are provided to facilitate their learning.
Departmental seminar, Remedial and tutorial classes are also organized for the benefit of the students.

The field trips are done locally within West Bengal to arouse interest of students to various practical aspects of the course through in-field demonstrations.
