1.1) We are a play by post server.
All games are text-based, and the typical expectation is that players post each day. If you are not active, your character’s actions may be made by the party with the best intentions for you, in order to carry the game forward.
1.2) The in-game Culture of Atlas:
Many game-worlds have evil the party seeks to fight against, one day re-gaining a peaceful kingdom. Atlas is a different sort of game-world. on the giant list of world-types, Atlas falls into a spectrum of Dystopian to Grimdark in its cosmic makeup and general temperament. The flotilla is not a shining beacon of light, but a place where survival and meritocracy are acceptable for the characters of the world. Winning against the odds should be savored, the battles are not often fair, the PCs will struggle and die.
1.3) Our flotilla is a mercenary group that moves around the map. at the rate of 60 miles per day.
This movement is determined by the GM team. A character who chooses to not move is no longer a part of the flotilla.
1.4) Gameplay here is level 1-10.
Legate Status is a seperate system we replaced to advanced characters beyond level 10, please check the linked page.
1.5) Please do not upload content that is paid.
Kevin Crawford, and others have put their own work into that material and deserve to be compensated as such. Read the Book. It's free in Books and read the Essential Lore
1.6) We allow any number of characters, but only play what you can handle.
1.7) PCs need to want to work together.
"All of the characters exist because they are part of the [flotilla], not the other way around."-DanB
It doesn’t matter how or why your PC wants to work with the other characters. Maybe it’s a spirit of grudging cooperation, or suspicious association, or an alliance of convenience. It can be any reason that your character concept can justify, but it has to boil down to your PC wanting to help and cooperate with the other PCs. It’s your job to explain why your PC is willing to adventure alongside the other characters. If you can’t come up with a reason, it’s not the GM’s problem; you need to find one or make a new PC.
1.8) Players for games are picked via a lottery system if more apply than slots exist. (You may use the !lotto command to get the following info in discord)
Gm says I have X number of spots available for level X-X, and gives a time they will accept !data entries to randomly select.
People Put !data into a mission for those spots.
After time closes, GM Assigns a number to the players by rolling a 1d100 per player, and assigns them in order of data received.
Highest rolls get the spot.
This does not preclude a group from assembling their own party, or the GM reserving spots for specific players.
It is natural that we don't always get along with everyone in our game world and this is not necessarily a bad thing, but hopefully the players can resolve this amicably.
2.1)Nothing NSFW allowed This is very straight forward, if it is inappropriate for a child, you cannot post it here.
2.2) We allow cussing, but not discrimination / hate speech or insulting other players
2.3) If a player chooses an option for their character which is considered in-character betrayal, there is the player to player social repercussions. It is very likely that one player will choose to no longer play in the same games as the other. See rule 1.8 for game priority.
2.4) Players who attack another player's character or assets, or seek to cause harm to another player's character well being or assets, will be gm-fiat prevented, that player will be warned once that our server is not the place for that nonsense, and if the issue persists, the player will be removed from the server.
2.4.1: Players may Spar, in open RP only, in non lethal matches.
2.4.2: Pre-planned cinematic deaths, with pre-determined outcomes with the GM, and both players are exempt.
2.4.3: Players making stupid, but not malicious decisions, are exempt. Yes this is open to GM interpretation
There are two primary modes of gameplay: open RP and missions-group
3.01) The open RP category has multiple channels, check the pinned messages for the description. These are the channels that count toward weekly XP.
3.02) The discord events have missions that start on specific days, you find the corresponding mission in the missions category.
3.03) When you join, you want to place your core information into the game thread, this is found by typing !data , then copying and pasting that info into the channel for the GM.
This allows the story to progress if only one or two players are holding up the scene. This allows you to play and join games even if you have less time than other players.
3.04 Mission XP comes in three flavors:
Adventures
These are longform missions that will take a significant amount of time to complete. They are measured in months rather than weeks. Any mission that lasts more than a month is reclassified as an Adventure. Players may continue to use characters sent on adventures on missions, but the benefits of anything gained on an adventure do not apply until they are no longer on a mission or an adventure. Adventures give a flat 8xp. Every 2 weeks an adventure/mission goes over the XP cap, each party member gains 1 additional renown upon mission completion. There is no cap on the number of adventures a character may participate in.
Missions are midform content that consists of a simple singular objective, typically with few steps between beginning and completion. "Destroy the tavern full of werewolves", "Escort the merchants from one town to another", and "Break the actual devil out of prison" are examples of missions. They should typically be resolved in less than a month, and be rather simple in scope. Missions give 2xp per week, unless they become an adventure. A character can be on only 1 mission at a time.
Scenarios are shortform content that consist of one or two "moments". They typically resolve in less than a week, possibly consisting of only a day or two of rp. "Visiting the apothecary in Candela", "Defending the Caravan against a horde of razorhorns", or "Survive your squire's assassination attempt" are all examples of scenarios. A character/player may be in as many scenarios as they can manage. Typically, they don't reward XP or Renown unless they have some element of genuine risk to the players involved. Scenarios give 2 Xp for Lvl 1-3, and 1 XP for lvl 4+, IF the scenario warrants XP reward.
The "create a copy" function on our character sheets in google sheets solves the problem of managing inventory. The simplest way for a player to track two seperate "instances" of a character is to simply make copies of their master sheet if they are in separate missions, and merge them when complete.
3.05) Death (p227) The GM should make abundantly clear to the players that people with big knives are dangerous in this game and that combat is likely to get novice heroes killed if it's not approached with a maximum of tactical advantage. If you make a foolish decision, the GM will typically warn you, then describe your demise.
3.06) A player who has decided that the mission is no longer interesting, fun, or just generally no longer wants to be involved with a mission can choose to stop actively using their character, but the character is considered to still be in the mission, with the party. A character who makes this choice would be considered to no longer be playing in the mission, but their character's actions can still be maintained through the data entry, or from the character sheet. If the party all dies, that character is also considered dead.
3.07) Gms should individually ping the player when new loot is received and they may be away.
3.08) A player may not choose to simply remove their character from a mission unless it was decided prior to the mission that characters could freely come and go. Characters are free to return to the caravan early if their PC is capable of doing so. They do not simply disappear and reappear at the caravan, however, and must reasonably have a way to return. Risks may be involved as much as they normally would be.
3.09) when a player makes an action that the GM determines to have initiated combat, all player characters present in the scene are considered to be a part of that combat.
3.10) a character which is pushed into combat against the players will or against what they wish their character to do can then choose to run away, cower and fear, surrender or make any other reasonable action to show that their character is not involved. Choosing not to fight does not necessarily mean you aren't still in danger.
3.11) If a character is not involved in a combat, objective, or generally unwilling or unable to participate, their share of loot and rewards is not reduced.
3.12) GM adjudication by selling the item and splitting silver evenly in cases of unresolvable issues of distribution. In the event a high value item is obtained, the GM does have the discretion to say that that high value item should only be distributed to the people directly involved in obtaining it. The value of the item is GM discretion.
3.13) If a player simply stops responding in game, the GM can consult with the rest of the GMT to consider removing that character's reward at the end of the mission, as it is assumed the player is no longer active on the server.
3.14) Items sold to the flotilla's NPC vendor Brunt, are bought at 90% of book value. If an item is bought from the vendor, it is at 100% of the book value.
3.15) Ship Ownership
A ship is an important investment for your character. You do not need to buy a ship, as there is always "Some ship" willing to take you to a mission. Choosing to become involved with shipping has financial stakes for your character, you should not go into this character development scenario without considering the financial side of the endeavor and planning accordingly.
- A ship may only be owned by one character, they may not take out loans from other players/characters to acquire it. NPC loans are on a case-by-case basis and subject to the approval of Max.
- Players are responsible for tracking traveling and mission time, as paying the crew and supplies needed are done monthly, and using Food/water is tracked per day per crew member.
- A ship with the flotilla does not have to pay for supplies/food/water/salary until the ship is again in use for any missions/activities or traveling to or from such.
- A ship's NPC crew does not receive a split of loot unless otherwise specified by the GM for that game.
- A sunken ship can be salvaged, but mostly for intact pieces, and there is no guarantee of any significant recovery depending on the situation.
4.1) Don’t advertise without permission from a GM.
4.2) If you break rules, we try to warn you, but super-dumb choices get the ban hammer.
4.3) We do not allow Kids or Kid-like characters. Its a mercenary flotilla.
