When making a character for Atlas, we require the use of our Character Sheet made by u/sidneymcdanger on Reddit. It can be found on our Discord Server, in the #Character_Vault's pinned messages. It can also be found here.
During the course of this guide, you'll learn how to make a character, and you'll see us build an example character alongside you- the noble Warrior Sir Place Holder.
Please remember to read the Server's Essential Lore, and Homebrew options first, We also allow all classes from The Atlas of Latter Earth.
Note: We do not allow Kids or Kid-like characters/NPCs. Its a mercenary flotilla.
While it is alright to do so, we require players to make their PC’s backstory and art different from the original content. When it comes to names, all is fair game as long as it’s not specific. Ex:Tony Stark, Sephiroth, Bruce Wayne, Mulan. We want to ensure characters that exist in Atlas are unique, and not just a re-hash of an existing fictional character from a book or other material. This allows characters to fit in better with Atlas lore.
Every character in Worlds Without Number begins the same way: By rolling for the character's six attributes. This must be done on our Discord Server, in the thread for your character in the Character_Vault. You can get a valid set of attributes by typing "!threshold" in that channel. Note down the resulting scores on your character sheet, in order.
As an example, we've filled in the stats for Sir Place Holder to the right.
After using the !threshold command, you may change one rolled Attribute to a 14. For Sir Holder, we're wanting to make him a Warrior, so we'll change the 7 we rolled for Strength to a 14.
In the field a little to the right of each attribute, you'll note that each has a Modifier. For scores 8-13, this is a 0, with anything lower being a -1 and anything higher a +1. The far ends of the scale, 3 and 18, are instead a -2 and a +2, respectively.
Sir Place Holder's attributes end up looking like the image on the right.
When you've got your Attributes down, next it's time to choose a Background, representing what your character has been doing leading up to their time with the flotilla, selected from the list on page 11 of the Worlds Without Number Book. For Sir Place Holder, we'll pick Soldier.
In the book, from page 12 and onwards, each Background has a description with the following relevant pieces of information; their Free Skill, their Growth, and their Learning. For their Free skill, note that down in your character sheet by writing a 0 in place of the -1 for that skill on the table.
When you've noted down the Free Skill, it's time to choose; you can select from between the Growth and Learning tables three times, rolling a d6 or a d8 respectively a total of three times between them. If you roll a result that's the name of a Skill, upgrade said skill from a -1 to a 0, or from a 0 to a 1. If you instead roll a "+1 Any Stat" or "+2 Physcial/Mental", you may add a +1 or a +2 to your attributes, following any guidelines for it being Physical (Str/Dex/Con) or Mental (Int/Wis/Cha).
For Sir Holder, we chose Growth twice and Learning once, getting a +2 Physical and 2 rolls of the Exert skill. We bring the Exert skill to a Level-1 and bring his constitution to a 14, making the modifier a +1.
Worlds Without Number is a system with 4 classes: the Warrior, the Expert, the Mage and the Adventurer. The first three deal with Weapons Combat, Skills and Magic, respectively, while the Adventurer lets you mix two of the first three together in a sort of half and half.
Sir Holder is a Warrior, which grants him additional health and an easier time hitting his enemies, as well as a few other distinct abilities, including Killing Blow. All the classes an their descriptions can be found on page 18 and onwards in the Book.
After picking a class, you will have the choice of at least one Focus, based on what class you picked. If you're a Warrior or an Adventurer that's part Warrior, you may pick one focus that's combat-oriented.
If you're an Expert or an Adventurer that's part Expert, you may pick one focus that's not combat-oriented. If in doubt, ask a GM.
Regardless of your class, you also get to pick one Focus of your choice for free. You can pick the same Focus twice to get it's Level 2 effect. All the foci are found starting on page 22 of the Book, and you'll get more as you level up.
Sir Place Holder gets to pick two, by virtue of being a Warrior. He picks Valiant Defender and Shocking Assault, giving him valuable abilities for both defense and offense in the heat of battle. Both of these give him some bonus skills, so he brings his Stab, already at level-0, to level 1. The other bonus skill would bring his Stab above level-1, but that is not possible at character creation, so he gets to place it anywhere else he chooses, in this case bringing his Survival to level-0 as well.
At this point, most of the choices for your character's mechanics have already been made. There's a few steps left to take, though.
If you haven't already, fill out your character's Name and Backstory. You also get two free skills- one, you can apply anywhere you like, representing your character's hobbies or other interests. The other you can apply to any combat skill- Punch, Stab or Shoot. This (Server Specific skill) represents the harsh nature of the world of Calypso, and the violence that everyone is forced to prepare for in one way or another.
Pick your languages and record them in the logs tab of your character sheet, languages are found on page 107 , with a custom list for the server here.
Lastly, find your characters Hit Points by rolling a 6-sided die. Note the number rolled (for Sir Holder, that's a 2. Yeowch.) on your sheet, and add 2 to it if you're a Warrior or Partial Warrior.
Your character is all made! Nude as a baby, they're ready to enter the world- though perhaps not quite yet. Not without their Equipment!
Equipment is all the gear that a member of the Caravan needs to survive their day-to-day, including their armor, weapons, and other knickknacks.
You can pick these in one of two ways: either roll for Silver Pieces, rolling 3d6 and multiplying that number by 10, or you can pick one of the Equipment Packages outlined on page 29 of the Book. Whichever way you choose, your character has an additional 100 silver pieces starting out. These can also be used to buy equipment.
For Sir Place Holder, we're happy to kit him out with the Armored Warrior equipment package. We make sure to note all his weapons, armor, and other things in the appropriate parts of the sheet. Finally, we add our 100 silver pieces to the sheet under the Logs tab.
Now post your character sheet into your Character Vault. To get the link, press Share at the top right, then change the access to "anyone with the link" and copy your new link for the channel.
After This, right-click your character name in discord, and edit your server profile to add your character name. If you have many characters, enter at least the first three letters of each character's name.
