In 1987, Africa In April began in downtown Memphis as a program of two educators. The objective was to bring together the African diaspora, visual and performing arts for a weekend of education, dance, music, food and arts exhibition. The success of the program led to the formation of a nonprofit which became Africa In April. Since 1987, the festival has attracted thousands of people local and across the world in all its programs. In 2006, relocated to Robert R. Church park at worlds famous Beale St. where it operated successfully in the vibrant district currently today.
