Triple Crown Over - Good Job to All Fighters!
Our Gold Medalist And Brave Challenger
Our Bronze Medalist And Worthy Foes
Congratulations to all the fighters, together we earned gold, silver, and bronze, it takes a lot of heart to compete and each fight can really go either way in BJJ.
There really never is a fair fight, but by stepping into the arena anyways you are silencing your own fear and self-doubts in a special way, it matters more to be willing to try than to win every time and you can learn a lot from a loss about what you need to practice more or just how the tournament system works, but the really special thing is "feeling the pressure, and facing that pressure," that's something you will remember that you did, and when life gives you pressure of a different kind, you will know that inside yourself you have the strength to face it and move forward.
The Point System:
Back with Hooks and Top Mount = 4,
Pass to Side Control = 3,
Sweep, Take Down, Knee On Belly =2
Most Wednesdays 1 PM
Update: Last week we went back to basics with boxing. We also had a tiebreaker for the Mata Leon Choke, very well done to everyone who tried! I'm very proud of all the students!
We are now on registered with the Hawaiian Federation of Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu as Sunshine MMA Academy
About Us: Our karate format follows Kick Time Karate from Robert Meltzer, you can practice it at home if you want to get "too awesome", our BJJ lineage is Helio Gracie > Royler and Rolker Gracie > Cleber Luciano > Bill Tetsch (who is blind) > me Sakura Mendoza! I am not a black belt, but I am a national champion, have been teaching for 8 years, and even went to train in Brazil with Kyara Gracie the multiple-time BJJ world champion, and one of my heroes in life.
Besides BJJ, I have a background in aikido, wrestling, boxing, and Shotokan karate, if you want to work on anything martial arts-related the mat is open to you after class, but do so with an adult there to help keep people as safe as possible. Thank you!
For the martial arts students who want to wear belts the colors are chosen from this value chart:
Our Belt System: Your level of skill stands apart from your color in this school. You get your belt by picking your "biggest value" and deciding what color that is for you and why. For example, I am a green belt, because that means "be the change you want to see in the world" to me, I care about the social and environmental harmony of the world, and I think living in moderation is a good way to step towards a better world.
Ex 2: My daughter chose an orange belt because although she strongly believes in Justice and Courage she felt Courage is the core of her strength as a person.
Why: When I trained with Kyra Gracie, a multiple-time world champion black belt, she didn't wear a black belt, she wore a pink one. Because pink represented her being a female during a time with fewer opportunities for female martial artists, she represented changing that, and it struck me that there should be at least equal opportunities for females in Jiu-Jitsu, a sport where smaller people can gain an advantage to defend themselves and because people don't always value martial arts for girls the way to do that is to not charge girls a tuition fee, beyond that Kyra didn't charge any students at her Social Institute for Change in Brazil, she just donated her time, which I really respect. In the end, I really believe the only rank or grade that matters is the one you give yourself, and by doing the belt system this way I know all the students have reflected on their values at least once, which I think is the greatest strenth a person can have, to know themselves.
The Deeper Meaning of Martial Arts is 改 善 "Kaizen"
Self Improvement
Don't Just Talk About Your Values; Live Your Values
Other than physical techniques, martial arts is also about controlling your breathing with deep breathing to avoid panic as well as mindfulness/controlling your own mind with mental tricks and skills.
Deep Breathing Helps Anxiety/Panic Attacks
Mindfulness Helps You Live in the Moment
Surprisingly deep breathing is the hidden key to staying calm when fighting.

Does martial arts stand for more than force?
It really depends on you, the student,
you make it what it is, you choose good or evil.
