100% to Our 501 Savings Goal!
Many of you helped us save up for our $600 501 fee, it took us less than a year and came from the community directly, which was important to me that it was a show of good faith that the community stands behind us. Now we begin the 501 paperwork for federal tax exempt status. If we are approved we can qualify for government educational grants, qualify on Amazon's Smile Charity list, as well at other businesses.
Special thank yous to Gabby, for getting us started even though she was already in Israel, to the parents, grandparents, aunts, friends, teachers and strangers who put their trust in us that we will use their money justly and in the conscious best interest of the public. As a non-profit we have a legal and ethical responsibility to do good things for the greater public interest and honor the trust placed in us as a group, I hope we will always go beyond meeting that legal obligation and fulfil that wish to do good in spirit beyond the legal checkbox.
Paperwork is now underway, directors will be meeting monthly (2nd Wednesdays) to complete the paperwork. If there are any public complaints or private concerns they can be emailed to adventurescoutshawaii@gmail.com to be reviewed by the directors as well, we do try our best to represent a diverse and wide section of the public as best we can and are interested in suggestions and honest feedback.
A special shout-out to our Patreon Supporters!
Thank you so much! We just reached a new milestone of $100 from Patreon Supporters, that's inspiring to me because it shows we can handle modern payment methods, it shows a wider range of support than just in person donations and it shows that private funding is available for us to be our creative selves even if government grants don't work out in the future we can continue to exist with the level of help we get from the private sector.
Milestones:
Incorporated as a Hawaii State Non-Profit Corporation 2-23-2022
Registered as an Educational Outreach Charity in Hawaii State 2-25-2022
Adventure Garden Became a USDA People's Garden March 2023

Brain Science
Learning Outside = Learning More
The Blue Gum Eucalyptus Grove, Koa, and 'Ōhi'a Trees keep the air clean, it's nice to enjoy the fresh air:
97% of teachers say that outdoor play is critical for children to reach their full potential.
88% of teachers say that children are happier after playing outdoors.
88% of teachers say that children are more engaged in learning when taking lessons outdoors.
86% of teachers say that playing outdoors gives children a better understanding of the environment. *
Neuroscientist John Medina has learned that the human brain developed to learn outside:
"What we know about the brain comes from biologists who study brain tissues, experimental psychologists who study behavior, cognitive neuroscientists who study how the first relates to the second, and evolutionary biologists. Though we know precious little about how the brain works, our evolutionary history tells us this: The brain appears to be designed to (1) solve problems (2) related to surviving (3) in an unstable outdoor environment, and (4) to do so in nearly constant motion. I call this the brain’s performance envelope."
Which is why outdoor time can be such a great learning component, find out more in his book Brain Rules or on his website.
Wasting Time or Boosting Brainpower?
Brain rule 1 says boosting brain power "our brains developed while we walked or ran as many as 12 miles a day. The brain still craves this experience. That’s why exercise boosts brain power."* How exactly? "Exercise improves memory by increasing molecular targets like the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This molecular factor increases synaptogenesis, forming new synapses that mediate learning and memory, making it easier to absorb information and form long-term memories."**
Brain Working Hard or Hardly Working?
Brain Rule 3 says working hard: "whether you get enough rest at night affects your mental agility the next day. Sleep well, think well. "*
Less Boring = More Learning + Better Health
Brain Rule 6 says "people don’t pay attention to boring things."* So adapting lessons to outside can boost learning speed simply because it's less boring, learning from real life was often called studying the book of the world. "Furthermore, many studies found that class-related boredom had several negative effects on academic performance and health." *** So getting outside is not only about better learning, but also overall health.
Is Exploring Leisure or Learning?
Brain Rule 12 says, learning. "We are powerful and natural explorers. This never leaves us, despite the artificial environments we’ve built for ourselves."*
Why harp on John Medina's brain rules? Because after reading John Medina's books I agree with his findings, and this is research based, even if imperfect, the older system was based on was political/invented conventions, I believe adapting to research based learning methods will better the students of today and through them the world.
“Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.”
- Ralph Waldo Emmerson
I am going to mention that just like the spring trip, the summer trip left us somewhere we did fail as well. It should be a learning lesson that even though we have old friends in the group, we also have people who don't know one another, and either way as a group, we protect and represent the interests of our kids, and the group. If we behave poorly at home, or not at a group event, that is personal, but at a group event we reflect on, and have the capacity to damage the reputation of ourselves, but also our group, including the kids, and including the parents. I'm not saying it matters that you look or act perfectly, but there is a line of common consideration and decency, that we all already know and understand in our hearts and minds, and if we are not frustrated, we all already have an understanding of where the limits between joking vs teasing are, where the limits of speaking our mind vs shouting at another person are. When we are not frustrated we naturally keep a limit to how far we are going to deviate from our best selves, but I'm asking that everyone be careful when they are frustrated also. Be careful for all of us, because no one knows how much hurtful things said are going to hurt others, it could be a lot, or not at all, you never know what is in someone else's heart. And you don't know if someone who might have joined or donated to the group is walking by just then, and decided they don't want any part in a group with tension and angry outbursts. But most importantly we have to make sure we don't become that (a group with tension and angry outbursts) for ourselves, because we have been a positive and uplifting group through many differences between us, and many small mishaps, and our future as a group and lies in staying an overall positive and uplifting group, there is enough bitterness and disharmony in the world already elsewere. Isn't there? - S 🕊️
🗽 Happy 4th of July! 🎆

Great Job to Everyone Who Entered the Science Fair!
Every video taught a new perspective about science to the creators, parents, and other students, all were a pleasure to watch and it was great to have a sense of community and fair competition. Thank you for all the hard work and courage to try something new. 🏆
Science Fair 2022
From live poultry to digital green-screen effects, from live fire to handmade rainbows, from the desert of Isreal to the pacific ocean of the Hawaiian Islands, the science fair was an amazing event. I'm proud of all the participants, for many the first time public speaking is a worthy challenge. I enjoyed each and every entry, some had more data, some had more style, I hope everyone enjoys watching them as much as I did, a huge thank you to all the parents and helpers who made the day extra special including our main sponsor American Agricredit Hilo! 🌈

Growing Interest In Scouting Activities
Looking forward to using the weekly Wednesday meet-ups as a time to communicate about monthly Saturday scout challenges or explorations, by checking in with the kids and parents as to what activities to explore next we are figuring out how to get more organized as a scout unit while being mindful of the real interests of our participants and comfort levels of what we are able to do with our young scouts and older scouts.
Right now looking into some either fishing or possibly an inclined track derby, but no details yet. Everything is in the planning phase and all ideas are welcome.
2022 Spring Camping Trip Over
Fun Had - Lessons to Learn from Also
Our Spring Camping was March 24th (day and night) -25th (day) great job to the scouts who completed navigation by compass or the sun, as well as checking out the constellations at night or Venus/Mars/Saturn in the morning, setting up tents, learning, and using the bowline knot.
Notable mention to the one scout who achieved the "Camping Skills" badge and good work to the many who explored some of the scout skills.
Looking forward to the summer camping trip, date to be determined, and learning as we grow to do hiking and transport double safety checks, making sure the kids go out with an adult and or a walkie talkie.
NEXT STEP: We are currently saving all donations towards a 501 application: We are official in the state of Hawaii, as a education non-profit corporation and registered science outreach charity, but to go further we are in the process of saving donations for the $600 501 filing fee, which would give us federal tax exempt status and let us apply for Amazon Smile Charity status and many other grants. Accepting $50 Patron and $100 Royal Patron donations towards that goal. Current amount saved = $0. Please give donations to Jennifer Bade for those interested and no worries for those who are not currently able to donate.
We are also now on Patreon for those that want to support either our Science Challenge, Math Challenge, Beach Meet Up, Seasonal Camping Trips, or Budding Artists! We have a $1, $10 and $100 level that goes a long way to cover the cost for scout badge patches ext. As a donor you can always choose if you want your donation to go directly towards the kids, towards a certain program or to the organization as a whole.
Thank you to everyone who donates their time, money to drive over, supplies and patience, it doesn't go unnoticed those of you who help set up, tear down, teach classes, chase toddlers, take home supplies, donate art supplies or bring ducks.
Thank you to attorney general Holly Shikada, we have been approved as a registered educational charity in the State of Hawaii! We are still a small start-up but we now have a EIN to accept donations for future programs. Our instructors are still unpaid volunteers, but the possibilities of grants in the future are broader.
Theatre Arts Founder Gabriella Honeybud
Founding Members
Our group is so small it doesn't seem necessary to explain what we do or who we are in a formal way, but someday those of us who founded the group will be gone, and perhaps people will wonder.
Jennifer Bade was always interested in science exploration, creative exploration, and fun activities for kids, having majored in Early Education and inturned in a preschool she has a passion for young learners. Her daughter and my daughter became best friends. I, Sakura Mendoza, always had a passion for martial arts and taught in California, but wasn't set up in Hawaii.
We had a lot of fun activities just among ourselves until Gabriella Honeybud came to stay from Isreal. We had all met at Ka'Pa Alana Preschool at the Richardson Center.
Gabby's child wanted to resume karate, and my child wanted to take theatre, we just happened to be instructors in the subjects that one another's children were interested in learning. So we started exchanging classes and bringing along activities for siblings who were not interested in theatre or martial arts.
Rather than think of what we wanted the kids to do, for the most part, we found out from them what they wanted to do and would try to find ways to make that happen. Each child added more fun and new ideas and each parent offered more help, setting up, bringing ideas or things, and taking home supplies.
Many other parents helped, especially Angel who took most of the pictures on this website, Monique and Kimberly both helped a lot with activities, ideas, and sharing the work. Amber suggested we apply for grants, which led us to file incorporation with the state and start saving for our 501. Each child who comes and has fun inspires us to keep it going for next week. For me each martial art's student who smiles or laughs makes it worth it for me, yes I like them to learn, but what is the point of learning without fun or life without fun?
So I completely appreciate the parents here and kids here who keep the dream alive, but I've also reflected on what made us able to start in the beginning? And it was Gabriella Honeybud.
On our spring camping trip her husband, Avi, showed us how to make fire with a fire bow. It isn't as easy as you might think. It took me at least 7 tries to get it. The spark was easy, I could get a new spark in 5 minutes. But for me moving from that spark in the windy Volcano weather, was painstaking. Avi started a fire, no problem, he was an expert at that. Another male camper started a fire with some help and time, first try... I kept struggling. But since I knew they were able to do it with that equipment and those conditions, I knew I would be able to as well... So later that day I did, with a lot of help from Avi.
Some fire bow tips, all the tinder ready for the spark to burn into a flame, all the kindling ready for the flame to burn into a fire, and it needs pressure downwards on the fire stick, but not so much it squeaks loudly, and it benefits from an arched pathway, it doesn't need speed as much as pressure until it smokes then it doesn't need really fast speed as much as it needs not to stop.
So Jenny may have started the spark, or maybe it was me, but it wasn't anything without Gabby, she nurtured it to a flame and it is you now, our parents and participants and supporters who will keep the fire alive now if you choose to. - Sakura Mendoza
