Summer Science Together
A few of our families have started watching the Cosmos Series to discuss and draw pictures together. The suggestion is A. watch an episode a week, B. have your kids write or dictate 3 things they remember about it (3 points) and 1 question about something they didn't understand, are interested in, or would like to learn more about (1 point). Drawings are extra credit (1 point) and Deep Dive videos are extra credit (1 point each).
The Cosmos Episode 1 Season 1 (Daily Motion) Episode 1 Season 1 (Fox) Also on Amazon Prime
Extra Credit Options: Dive deeper into micro hunters or the Super-Kamiokande neutrino discoveries!
Ultraviolet Slime
Confirmed some of the UV slimes we made on July 6th do glow, great job to everyone who mixed their own slime!
Botany Challenge - How Many Plants Can You Name?
Answers on the Scout Page
Gather 10-12 large lau kahi leaves and some flower spikes, if available. You may combine lau kahi with comfrey leaves.
Chop up the plant material into 1-inch lengths.
Boil 1 quart of filtered water in a non-metallic pan, such as Pyrex.
Add your lau kahi and reduce the heat to a simmer.
Simmer for 20 minutes, then remove from heat; cool.
Scoop out the mushy plant material, squeeze the excess water from it and hold it on your wound for as long as you can. Use tape to hold the lau kahi in place for longer periods of time.

Chemistry - Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano
Chemical Double Displacement and Decomposition
*Iceland Volcano Footage Video Credit, "Teeth" by 5 Seconds of Summer Song Credit
The chemical reaction actually occurs in two steps.
1. First, there is a double displacement reaction in which acetic acid in the vinegar reacts with sodium bicarbonate to form sodium acetate and carbonic acid:
NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → NaC2H3O2 + H2CO3
2. Carbonic acid is unstable and undergoes a decomposition reaction to produce the carbon dioxide gas:
H2CO3 → H2O + CO2
The carbon dioxide escapes the solution as bubbles.

🌊 Navigation by the Full Moon 🌕
Can you spot the full moon? It rises in the East and sets in the West just like the sun does, but it rises 50 minutes later every day, which shifts high tide by 50 minutes later as well in most places. The moon orbits the Earth every 27 days, 7 hours, and 43 minutes, very close to a 30 day month, but far enough that the moon calenders of the world (like China) and the sun calendars (like the US) get out of sync.
The Worm Moon, as beetle larva "worms" emerge from tree bark this month (in Dakota areas), other names include: the Wind Strong Moon (Pueblo), the Sugar Moon because maple sugar flows (Ojibwe), Goose Moon (Cree), and the Eagle Moon (Algonquin).
How would you name our Hawaii March Moon? Or the March moon where you live?
A Little Less Traffic During Spring Break Moon?
Do You Know Where You Get Mad?
We all get mad when people "press our buttons" but do you know what brain region is the button and which is our rage area?
The Amygdala is like the button when we get triggered we can either be afraid/angry in that region or get even angrier in the hypothalamus, of course, that is an oversimplification, but those regions are more associated with those functions than say memory, which is largely related to the hippocampus (is your best self a hippo school 🏫🦛?).

Adventure Scouts Science Fair 2023
No project is too big or small, but all are welcome to earn a science fair badge!
More Details to Come April Next Year:
Ribbons and prizes will be given for places 1 through 5 after voting is complete.
Please be ready to record a 1 or 2 minute presentation about your project so dress in clothes your business casual if you do not want to be recorded in swimwear. Presentations can be redone as much as needed for nervous speakers or done in a group.
Please do not worry about your project being detailed or large, but rather on finding something you honestly find cool about nature or something that you think would be inspiring for other kids to know or see.
Creativity, ingenuity, and execution will be the judging criteria.
Some Still Available!
Very excited to see where our participants go with their projects next year!
Learning is funtastic!
