Adventure Scout Oath
Respectful of the Past
Trying Our Best Today
To Build a Better Future Tomorrow
ORIGONS
For those that haven't heard of the FFA it's a club for people taking an agriculture class to help them learn in a deer way and offer social and work opportunities. An interesting part of the club is that it has many different levels and people are encouraged to engage in the level they want to, maybe more, maybe less.
My daughter took Agriculture 1 this past school year and I was surprised at how ethical and thoughtful the FFA Creed is:
THE FFA CREED
I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds – achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years.
I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.
I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil.
I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so–for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me.
I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.
ADAPTATIONS TO MODERN DAY
While the original FFA Creed is very inspiring, I believe that humanity needs to begin to get along and work together on a global, not only national level, to survive and thrive. As we were all from one family, I think we need to become one family again, though it may be in the far distant future before this really occurs I wanted to reflect a global citizenship into our Scout Creed from the present forward. We share one Earth, to some extend we are already one world and in other senses we are still a world divided. Because our scout group is not solely an agriculture group there are adaptations to our creed from the FFA creed, but as Americans we are in a sense starting our ethics standing on the shoulders of the people who's ethical creed produced the FFA creed, so it is both a literal and a metaphorical precursor to who we are and where we came from.

Rules
1. COMMUNICATE RESPECTFULLY
DON'T HATE, SEPARATE
No angry yelling is acceptable, if you are too angry to talk don't try to talk at all until a later time.
WRONG TO ONE, WORD ALL DONE
If either person thinks a term is disrespectful it should not be used even if only one person finds it offensive.
YOU MAY THINK IT'S LAME, BUT CAST NO SHAME
Don't belittle people in any way such as their word choice, ability in any activity, if you don't like people, you don't have to play with/engage with them, but you may not bully them or insult them, especially yelling at anyone, adults and children included.
HAVING TROUBLE, DON'T LET IT DOUBLE
Try to get help if you run into a difficult combination of personalities and you are getting frustrated before you lose your temper instead of after.
ENFORCEMENT AND CONSEQUENCES
Everyone makes mistakes, everyone try to be an upstander instead of a bystander, problems will arise naturally but we should do the best we can to be respectful so that everyone is welcome to share and enjoy activities with their children without politics and drama overshadowing everything good that we are.
If you do overstep the line of decency, you know it, please apologize, if it doesn't work at least you did the right thing. It may be too late to be friends, but it's never too late to do the right thing.
If we have ongoing trouble with the same individual they will be asked to complete communication retraining before returning to group events.
PATIENCE AND RETRAINING
We are all imperfect people, some of us never got family, school or professional healthy communications lessons, please do your best to be a work in progress as to speaking kindly or at least professionally toned/neutrally, but not negatively/demeaning towards one another in a group setting, some people are more sensitive than others, it's not their job to leave, but rather our job to reach at least a middle ground level of non-abusive, non-threatening communication, because that is the only communication appropriate for child center events such as ours.
“Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.”
- Ralph Waldo Emmerson
It's a Good Time to Learn
The Journal of Polynesian Society has a lot of interesting articles based on hundreds of years of research that may interest people interested in learning more about Hawaiian and also other Polynesian culture, upon reading the placenta burial rituals it becomes evident what a strong variety exists, but also the strong connection of the elemental forces of Earth to humans in a similar way to Chinese/Native American Cultures.
The Hawaiian Culture seems to me to be going through a renaissance after Hokulea (the double-hulled voyaging canoe) travelled back to Tahiti in 1976 and was greeted by 17,000 people, and also around the world in 2017, it seemed to me a peace offering between Hawaii and the world, and the world and Hawaii. Hawaiian language lessons are available free on Duo Lingo (Computer or Phone App) while some things are still private and sacred many songs and dances and other cultural skills and wisdoms are now available to everyone in good faith.
