General Notes: From Ed Armbrust: Sarah married Edward Ingram in 1907 in Sault Ste Marie, Canada, before moving to California of that year. He posted on Rootsweb, I am trying to locate the whereabouts of my grandmother (Sarah "Sadie" M. Rhyndress) during that time period when she was more or less abandoned by her father when he remarried after the death of his first wife and Sarah's mother. I believe her father more or less abandoned her (12 years old) when he remarried a woman much younger. She may have been placed in an orphanage or with other families. I may have found her in the 1901 census living with Farmer or Farner family but using an assumed name (Sarah Armstrong). The relationship in the census is difficult to read. The date and year is correct and this is the only Sarah listed in the census with the correct birth. Also there are no records of a Sarah Armstrong born 7 Sep 1888.
The posted reply said they did find Sarah M. Rhydress marrying an Edward S. Ingram on September 6, 1907 from the Sault Star newspaper. They also looked for Sarah on the 1901 census' for Blind River, St. Joseph's Island and Thessalon (These are the other nearby small towns) but there is no mention of Sarah Rhydress on those either.

GEORGE JACKSON ADDISON
(1909 – 2004)
At home in Toronto on June 20th, 2004. Predeceased by his wives, Jean Forrest McCubbin (1960) and Elizabeth Norton DeWitt (1985) and by his son Peter McCubbin (1990), also by his brothers ''Bill'' and ''Pete'' and his sister Louise Lewis. Raised in Toronto, he worked at A. E. Long Paper Box Company from 1931 to 1989. He was generous and loving to three generations of family. Uncle George is fondly remembered by these and the community at Addison Beach where he spent his summers. A funeral service will be held at the TRULL ''NORTH TORONTO'' FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE CHAPEL, 2704 Yonge Street (5 blocks south of Lawrence), on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, donations to The United Way of Toronto, Doctors Without Borders, AIDS in Africa, or The United Church of Canada, would be appreciated.

George Gibson ADDISON Wase was not the son of John and Jennie Wase. After several years they had given up hope of having children and adopted George from Jennie's cousin (Addison), whose mother had died leaving the father with many small children. George married Carrie and they had a son George Jr. Later he married Hazel Babcock in 1929. George's brother was Charles Addison of Vanessa, whose soon Bruce is still a resident of Vanessa.
My deduction is that George Addison Wase was the son of George Gibson Addison, whose wife Elizabeth died in 1881 and left him with several young children, one of which was named George and who was two when his mother died.
Ancestry Email from Francine J. Crouchley: Two boarder crossings into the US from British Columbia. One George Addison Wase is sending his son George Carlyise (sp?) Wase to his mother Carrie in 1921. The second boarder crossing from the same location of George Addison Wase in 1923 listing nearest relative as Edmond. Something happened to Carrie but I have no idea what. I haven't looked for her on the 1920 census. George A. Wase on the 1930 is m. to a different woman but George C. Wase shows at age 15. George C. Wase was my ex-father in law. He applied for a name change. It appears he was using Carlye and not George or maybe his father was. Anyway he had it changed and became a US citizen in 1944. He passed away in 1989. He has 2 living sons who were not aware he was born in Canada - I spoke with one of their bothers from a previous marriage/same mother and he said George Carlyle Wase was adopted.

Charles Addison purchased the undertaking business in 1907 from Mr. Fish and in 1940, W. L. (Wilfred Lawrence) Addison, son of Charles was the funeral director.

General Notes: May Elizabeth was the oldest child of Joseph and Lucinda. She completed High School and immediately started teaching school in a rural school about 12 miles from her home in Silver Water. She taught in Silver Water as well. She moved to the North Shore (the area from Sault Ste Marie to Espanola) to teach in the mid 1920s where she met Roy Woodhouse who worked as a section man on the CPR. They married in 1926 and moved to Parry Sound shortly after when Roy's father, who was a station agent for CPR was posted there. May became quite ill in the 1930s with Pernicious anemia and nearly died. She was saved by a massive blood transfusion. Roy worked all through the Depression but nevertheless, times were tough and the family, like many others, was poor. When the war started there was a shortage of teachers and May went back to teaching in 1943. She continued to teach until her death at age 52 from a heart attack.
May married Roy Allen WOODHOUSE 2 on 7 Sep 1926. Roy was born on 6 Dec 1898 and died on 11 Mar 1961 aged 62.

During the depression he worked in Detroit at GM and later as a bread route driver in Hamilton. He purchased a farm in Silver Water after WWII and farmed until he died in 1966. Daisy died of cancer in 1966 at age 65. They had two daughters, Eleanor (1927) and Muriel (1936).

Her husband died in 1960 and she returned to Manitoulin Island at some point and lived in a retirement home until her death in the 1990s. They had two sons, James (1931) and John (1935) .

General Notes: Ted farmed his share of the family farm until the mid 1930s when he sold his half to his brotherJack, purchased a truck and went into the trucking business. Despite the depression he was successful and in 1940 purchased one of the biggest and most successful farms in Silver Water. He seemed to know the market - he raised sheep when they were a high priced commodity. He switched to turkeys at the top of their market, then became a feed dealer. He was successful in all these ventures. He was a happy go lucky sort and the favorite of all his neices and nephews. (including Bert Woodhouse who worked for him from 1940 to 1946 on his summer holidays for a $1.00 a day.)

Dorothy McKay (Addison)(Pidgen), a resident of Silver Water, died at the Mindemoya Hospital on Thursday, July 27, 2000 at the age of 78 years. She was born in Burpee
Township, daughter of the late Byron and Ada (Scott) Addison. Dorothy had worked in clothing stores and also at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Sault Ste. Marie. She was a member of St. Andrews United Church and the UCW. Dorothy was a wonderful seamstress, and had sewn for clothing stores, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and also loved to cook. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Dorothy was predeceased by her first husband Oliver Pidgen in 1975. She then married Donald (Dannie) McKay who survives. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Stella and Charles Swift; Judy and Roland Cornacchi all of Sault Ste. Marie; Dennis and Sharon Pidgen of Copper Cliff and Gary and Marcia Pidgen of Sault Ste. Marie. Step mother of Joyce and Don McDonald and Ann and Lyle Addison of Silver Water; and Cliff McKay and friend Keri of Sault Ste. Marie. The actual Peter Addison who married a Eliza was Robert Addison of the Pilots Helm, North Petherton originally Levens, only son, who would have been born 1870ish. Their only daughter was a Mabel who married a John in North Petherton or Bridgwater, and I believe they had one son. My mother was in contact with her and I can remember she visited my mother around the late 1960`s. She was at the time a house keeper to a Lord and Lady Ponsiby, who lived somewhere in the Sussex area of a small place near Chichester, maybe Selsey Witterings or there about.
Peter Addison and Eliza had daughter Mabel who married a John and I believe their only son was also a John. I seem to vaguely remember, they breed Chow dogs.
In a letter dated 1944 Peter stated his daughter (Mabel) was living in Oxford with her husband (John) who was a surveyor for the borough of Abingdon. They had a son, (likely John) born in about 1931.

Thomas Nicholas Addison, born November 1926, lived as his Dad and Granddad had before him in the cottage at 3 Old Chapel Lane, Levens and you all knew him, some of you will have known him for nearly 80 years, from school days, others will have known him as Dad and Granddad all your life, and me I only knew him by sight. Seeing him around the village.
You will all have your memories of Tommy and those memories will stay with you for ever, the special times, the funny times and the sad times all these memories and your love for Tommy will stay with you and inspire you as you continue on your journey of life.
I really enjoyed talking to Tommy's family and hearing about his early life, many of you will have memories to share about that too, about the privilege of having an allotment at school and how the tending of the allotment was passed on from one older child to a younger one, how Tommy one year won a prize of a pen knife for his allotment. No wonder his first job after leaving school was in the gardens at Levens Hall, perhaps with his father. But soon after he began an apprenticeship at Station Garage Arnside as a mechanic this small independent garage still exists today.
Tommy was an only child and when his mother died his cousin chick looked after him and his father John coming over to Levens a couple of times each week to do the washing and cleaning.
Tommy was too young to fight in the war but did his national service then came back and met Frances . They married in 1950, apparently most of his courting was done with the aid of a bicycle cycling into Kendal to visit Frances.
Then three boys were born first Ken then Tom and then Roger. They didn't see much of their father as they were growing up mainly because he worked so hard to support them, he was never out of work, always looking for the next job to provide as best he could and never afraid of hard work,
Tommy worked at Summerland Furniture Factory, as a builder and labourer for Manchester Corporation for Peter Rockcliffe his cousin, for Kendal Corporation and latterly for Russell Armer.
Tommy couldn't understand why and how his son Tom had stayed working for the same firm all his life.
Frances and Tommy kept an allotment for a time again to help feed the growing lads.
Because of Tommy's hard work, the family were able to have holidays, nothing posh but driving to Scarborough or Paignton in a borrowed car brought fond memories for the family.
When he was able to own his own car he did so with pride but the boys were not allowed to drive it.
The boys grown and flown the nest and in retirement Tommy and Frances began to enjoy holidays abroad, to places like Tenerife, Malta and Spain.
When he retired, Tommy was a little lost at first but began to find little gardening jobs to do around the village and would help a variety of people out as he tended their gardens.
He had to slow down after his heart attack 10 years ago but still could be seen walking round the village sometimes with his friend Wally's dog in tow.
When Frances became ill he helped look after her at home learning to do some of the housekeeping chores which he continued to do after her death.
Apparently, Tommy had a routine with his housework, Friday was bedroom day so if you were visiting on a Friday he would not be available till after the bedrooms had been done.
He began to take an interest in family history after a branch of the Addison family came over from Canada then America. The Canadian contigient have a whole web page of information about the Addison family which is fascinating. Tommy was the proud possessor of the family bible providing many interesting dates for his Canadian cousins. He enjoyed hearing about distant family many who had emigrated to America and Canada 2 or more centuries earlier. One noted ancestor Reverend Robert Addison, a missionary who founded one of the first churches of England in Canada in 1792.
Tommy was one of the people in the village, who could remember how things were, and spoke to the children from school about the days when there was no water or electricity in houses.
Tommy was an armchair sports fan mainly sports to do with cars and bikes and he really appreciated the variety that the digibox gave him I think he was a secret soap fan too.
He continued to plant up hanging baskets and pots. Right up till a week before his sudden illness and death.
He was an unassuming man never demanding, he loved his family very much spent time helping Tom and Liz build Pear Tree cottage helped with the drains on the playing field, he was the sort of man who would not push himself forward, but was happy to help others when asked.
The highlight last November was Tommy's 80th Birthday party when almost all his family gathered to help him celebrate. He was very special to each member of his family, I know his children, and grandchildren thought the world of him, and are naturally very sad at his death.
As today, we remember with love Tommy Addison, dad granddad cousin friend, I would also like you to remember three things;
Firstly, life is such a precious thing Tommy's 80 years is a good length of time to be on this earth and a new life will be born into this family soon.
We often take life for granted. What we must try to do is to receive it daily as a gift from God. If we do that then we will never cease to be amazed at the wonder and mystery of life.
Secondly what about death, as natural as life yet for many of us it is terrifying. In death, we realise that human things are of no avail. As Christians, we believe God has the power to overcome death only God can help us. God alone holds the keys of death. Therefore, we throw ourselves on the love and mercy of God. And we can trust on God because every life, including our own, is precious to God. Christians have always believed that there is hope in death as in life, and that there is new life in Christ after death. It is part of the mystery that is God but we trust in it and why?
That brings me to the third thing I would like you to remember. In death, particularly if it is sudden or tragic, people sometimes experience an apparent absence of God. Or blame God but the bible passage Liz read tells us differently; in sorrow and joy in pain and in pleasure there is nothing that can separate us from God's love it is there for each one of us. God is always there reaching out to us and all we have to do is turn to him. Often God's love is shown in the love and compassion of family and friends, but whatever way we experience it, God's love visits us each day in of our lives as well as at a time of death he visits us with comfort, peace and hope. So today we give thanks for the life of Thomas Addison and for our own lives, and we remember that God is with us in death as in life, may each of us always know his comfort, hope and peace.

General Notes: Herbert James (Grandfather Bumpa) was the eldest son of Thomas Powley and Florence Pillinger Addison. He was delivered at 52 Ferrier by the family doctor, who happened to be William Lockwood Thornton Addison, a distant relative. He grew up in the Danforth area of Toronto. As a youngster his family lived at 60 Ferrier St. When his father died in 1915 he was only seven. The family was poor and he left school to work as soon as he was old enough. As a youngster he delivered laundry that his mother did at home. He worked as a deck hand on a Laker for a year or so and then got a job at the Eatons Department Store where he met May Paxton.
For a while Herb & May lived with Aunt Annie (really May's mother) until Herb Jr arrived in 1928. Herb and May then rented a flat on Humberview Ave., from a Mrs. Philips. Pat was born there-not in the house, but at the Grace Hospital. Shortly after the family moved to Long Branch to be closer to Goodyear Auto tire factory on the Lakeshore and Annie got her job as a housekeeper at Tarry Hall in Bath, Ont. They moved downtown to Ferrier Ave with Herb's mother Florence for a year but that didn't work out and they moved back to Long Branch, likely to Marina Ave in the 30th St area. They then moved to 31 Elder Avenue where they lived while the kids grew up in the 1940s and 50s. Herb worked at the Goodyear for over 40 years, retiring in about 1970. In the 1950s the family moved to Alderwood where they lived at 13 Westhead Road.
In the 1940s the family began going up to Orr Lake where they rented a cottage on the south shore of the lake. Later on in the 1950s they moved to the north side and built a cottage on a lot behind Charlie Wicks. In 1962 Herb and May bought a cottage a few doors down where they remained for many years. After Herb retired he and May started holidaying down in Florida over the winters. Eventually in the late 1960's they sold the house on Westhead and moved to Elmvale so they would be close to Orr Lake.
Herbert married May PAXTON Addison,2 daughter of Margaret Anne (Annie) PAXTON Westlake, on 10 Sep 1927 in Toronto, Ontario. May was born on 5 Aug 1900 in Belfast, County Down Ireland,299 died on 3 Feb 1988 in Elmvale, ON aged 87, and was buried in Mar 1988 in Glendale Cemetery, Toronto, ON.

General Notes: Hilda was born at 60 Ferrier two weeks after her father Thomas Powley died. She has lived in the Danforth area of Toronto all her life. After her father Thomas Powley died her mother Florence took in boarders to make ends meet. When Hilda was 16 she had a relationship and married one of the boarders, Vernon Fenn. Vernon was a motor mechanic who worked in garages and service stations around the east end of the city. Hilda remembers they moved a lot in the early years as Vernon kept one step ahead of his creditors and seldom paid the rent on the flats they lived in. Her first son Teddy was born in 1932. He was followed by Walter (Buster) in 1934. Unfortunately Teddy died in 1936 when he fell off a balcony at the back of the flat they lived in on Walker Avenue. Vernon Fenn's creditors eventually caught up to him and he went to jail for fraud. Daughter Shirley was born in 1938. Things didn't work out with Vernon Fenn and they divorced in 1945.
Hilda later entered a relationship with a man named Thomas Prendergast and had a son Gerald by him. Prendergast was not a very good husband and shortly after Gerry was born Hilda told him to leave and not come back. In 1963 Hilda met a nice man named Fred Festorazi. She and Fred moved to 124 Lamb Ave and got married in 1964. She lived there right up until she died in May 2008.
Fred died of cancer in about 1980. Fred had a son Fred who also died of cancer in Jun 2001 at the age of 59. Her daugher Shirley married and had three children Cheryl, Joe and Tom with her first husband and later a son Ross with her second husband Murray Todd. Gerry married Rita and Walter (Buster) married Sally.
Hilda has many recollections of the family's first years in Toronto and provided much of the information on Thomas Powley Addison which she learned from her mother Florence. She remembers a visit of some relatives on the Addison side from Manitoulin Island when she was young and possibly living at 60 Ferrier with her mother. In the late 1940s Hilda remembers a visit from her mother's sisters Margaret, Janie and Margaret's daughter Sue (Esposito) She was living at 141 Harrison St near Dovercourt and Dundas at the time. She also recalls she last saw Margaret at Aunt Janie's funeral in the 1960s. She remembers her Grandfather Herbert Pillinger at her brother Ken's wedding, likely in the 1930s, drinking all the wine on the table before the toasts were finished. She also remembers visiting her brother Ken and his wife Gladys when they were living on Adelaide St, probably in the late 1950s. It was a bit of a run down apartment and soon after older brother Herb and Ken decided to build Ken and Glad a house out in the west end in Lakeview.

General Notes: From Penelope Messenger - Thomas Powley and her father were very close as boys; they were only about 11 months apart in age and grew up together. They both attended George V Boys Grammar School in Southport. Thomas was offered a scholarship to train as a Methodist Minister and spent most of his ministry in Scotland. He married a Scottish girl and lived in Inverness for many years. Her uncle George went up to live with him and his family. He had one daughter Fiona who is still living in Scotland. Apparrently he died quite suddenly in about 1998.

Agnes was the youngest and the shortest and was known as "Little Agnes".

General Notes: From Penelope Messenger - her father James Dyson Messenger joined the RAF when the second World War broke out and was involved in Radar. After the war he trained as a school teacher and came to work in Nottingham. He retired in 1978 as Deputy Headmaster of a Comprehensive school that, in her words, was a tough place. He was a quiet man with a very dry wit. He passed away in Oct 2000. Her father was very close to his grandfather (James Addison) and inherited his love of gardening - it was his great hobby.
