General Notes: Robert Addison, the Norwich pioneer, was born at Beathwaite Green in Westmoreland in 1794, the son of William Addison and Eleanor Moon. He was the Godson of his uncle Rev Robert Addison, the missionary and clergyman of Niagara on the Lake. Shortly after his uncle Rev Robert died in 1829, his widow Rebecca Plummer Addison returned to England and persuaded Robert to come out to Canada with his family and settle on one of the 200 acre lots in the Addison tract.
Robert and his wife Agnes accepted this offer and boarded the sailing vessel, the Brig Margaret, early in 1831. They landed at Niagara on May 1st, 1831, the voyage having lasted 3 months and 18 days. Their four sons accompanied them to Canada and a son Peter, and two daughters Agnes and Rebakah were born later in South Norwich Township.
The Norwich area had been surveyed in 1799 as part of Norfolk County. In 1800 it became a part of Oxford County and at about the same time Rev Robert had been granted some 6,000 acres for service to the Province of Upper Canada. When Robert and family arrived in the spring of 1831 they spend some time in Niagara, or Newwark as it was then known, staying with Rebecca at Lake Lodge, Rev Robert's home. Robert and the eldest sons were then piloted through the woods to the Addison land by an Indian guide. They spend the first summer clearing the land with an axe and a piece of a saw. They put up a shack where they lived during the first summer, and then they went back to Niagara for the winter.
Next year with the help of Anstice Treffry's father and brothers they built their first log home. Then they got a yoke of cattle and started to break the land. At the end of the summer Robert moved the rest of the family to the Norwich location. His first crop was potatoes. He borrowed some for planting from Henry Southwick. When he returned them he had three bushels in a sack and carried them, walking, a mile and a half to Southwick's. He noticed the stable door open and there lay Henry Southwick, dead, at the feet of his horse.
When Rebecca Addison heard of the location of the land that thye had chosen she gave them another sixty acres "fo thy bad choice". As his family grew they each acquired similar farms, much of it also Addison land, at 50 cents an acre, until they were working some 700 acres.
The old homestead was situated on lot 8 concession 10, on the nouthwest corner now occupied by Harold Arthur, one mile east and one mile south of Otterville. At one time, much of the farm land on both sides of Highway 59 south from the Otterville corner to Arthur's corners was Addison land. At first they walked eight miles to church in Dereham. Then a missionary came and began to talk of building a Wesleyan Methodist Church. He came to Robert to get help to build it and support it, which he did. That was the Summerville Church.
A story is told of how great grandfather Robert got for himself a logging chain to work his oxen. Sammy Cornell kept a store about 300 yards west of the Old Furnace. He told Robert to go to Brantford to get the logging chain, 30 miles. Robert walked between sun and sun on a blazed trail. When he got to Brantford he told the hardware what Sammy Cornell wanted. "Did you get an order?" "No". Robert came right back before the sun went down. He rested a day, then made the second trip, again between sun and sun. He carried the chain home, fourteen half inch links each four inches long, made by a blacksmith, with no hooks on it. Then he had to carry it to Carolan's, six miles, to get the hooks.
Robert died at the age of 86 years.

General Notes: Peter Addison was born in Beathwaite Green, which later in the mid-1800s, came to be named Levens. Levens was a local name which appears in the Doomsday Book. Peter met and married Jane Gibson who was the daughter from a large family from the Beathwaite Green Parish. For most of their lives Peter and Jane lived at Birks Cottage, the family home which he had inherited from his father.
In 1835 he, his wife Jane and eldest 3 children emigrated to Canada. They settled east of York (Toronto) in Pickering but did not remain there long. Perhaps the loss of two children in Canada prompted the family to return to England after several years as their next son was christened in Beathwaite Green. According to David Taylor, by the time of the 1841 Census the family was back at Birk's Cottage in Levens.
Peter is listed in the Family Bible as having died in Willsworthy, Kenton, Devon on 22 January (year unreadable, later confirmed as 1871). His widow, Jane aged 72, was living with her brother George Gibson and employed as his housekeeper. One of the younger sons, Nicholas was also living there with his mother.
There is an entry in the Index Wills and Administrations 12 May 1871 which reads: The Will of Peter Addison late of Kenton in the County of Devon, Molecatcher who died 22 January at Kenton was proved at Exeter by George Gibson Addison of Cowick Street St. Thomas in the said County Railway Porter the son one of the Executors according to the Tenor.
Some years after Peter's death Birks Cottage was sold. Trustees of Peter Addison deceased with receipt from Nicholas Addison as agent for the Trustees dated Nov 28 1887 including £440 from Thomas Claughton purchase money for Birks Cottage and £147 from John Coward for land at Levens Moss.
