Above is a copy of the original Society for the Propagation of the Gosphel in Foreign Parts document which appointed Reverend Robert Addison as a missionary to the Mohawks, stationed at Niagara, Upper Canada in 1791. Below is the story of his travel to Quebec and then on the Newark (Niagara on the Lake) were he established St. Mark's Church and ministered to the Indigenous people in the area.

39. Addison PARKER 14 (Isabel ADDISON Parker7, John6, Robart5, Christopher4, John3, John2, Robert1) was born in 1747 in Kendal, Westmorland, UK.
General Notes: From Anne Marley: My great grandmother x 3 was Isabella Parker, born c 1776 at Beathwaite Green in Westmorland, and her parents were Addison Parker and Jane Simpson. Addison was born c1747 in Kendal (according to IGI – I haven’t checked this out in the actual parish records yet). He appears to have been the son of John Parker and Isabel Addison, who I discovered in your amazing family tree on Rootsweb. It all seems to fit, as the family seems to have handed down the maiden family name to various sons, and there is a Simpson Parker, brother to my Isabella, and of course, Addison Parker has been given his mother’s maiden name. I was puzzled as to why he was born in Kendal, rather than Heversham or Beathwaite Green, but I may discover more information about that on my next visit to Kendal.
Addison married Jane SIMPSON 2 in 1766 in Heversham Church, Westmorland, UK.
The child from this marriage was:
+ 52 F i. Isabella PARKER 2 was born in 1777.

General Notes: John Addison is listed as a Shopkeeper in the 1829 Heversham Directory.
In the Church at Heversham, by Roger Bingham, it is stated that John Addison was listed as one of the churchwardens of St Peters Church in the Parish of Heversham in 1789. This reference could be to this John, or his father. This John's headstone is prominent in the church cemetery. The headstone reads, "Sacred memory of John Addison of Beathwaite Green, who died February 3rd, 1836 Aged 87 years. Also of Elizabeth Addison his Wife who died August 15th 1819 Aged 65 years. Erected by their Son-in-law William Crayston." He is often referred to in many documents as John Addison the younger.
John married Elizabeth DIXON Addison 2 on 7 Dec 1779 in Crosthwaite And Lyth, Westmorland, UK.8 Marriage status: married. Elizabeth was born in 1754 in Lancaster, UK,20 died on 15 Aug 1819 in Levens, Westmorland, UK aged 65, and was buried in Levens, Westmorland, UK.21

General Notes: In her father's Will Agnes is referred to as Agnes Taylor. David Taylor also states that Agnes' Father was confirmed as John Addison in the baptism registration of Jenny Taylor.
Agnes married Thomas TAYLOR 2 on 28 Jul 1772 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK. Thomas was born in 1749, died in Aug 1824 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK aged 75, and was buried on 8 Aug 1824 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK.

General Notes: From Diana Elias 29 Aug 2008: I was very interested recently to discover your website "Addisons of Westmorland" and the connection of the Addison famliy with the Plummers of Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire. My G G G grandfather was Thomas Addison who married Sarah Plummer of Whittlesey at St Leonards Shoreditch 6th June 1801. Sarah was born in 1771 Whittlesey and died in Lambeth aged 90 in 1861. I think she was the daughter of Robert Plummer and Mary Elsome. I do not know when Thomas was born or where but he died in about 1824. (Thomas has been a 'brick wall' for us for many years.)
Thomas wrote a will in 1812. He was living ar 4 Cowley St Westminster at that time, and was Acting Assignee for the Creditors to the Estate of William Hulls a Bankrupt. Williams Hulls was a cutler and had premises at 36 Leather Lane Clerkenwell. Thomas was in business at 36 Leather Lane some years later until about 1823. He and John Brumbley had steam grinding machines there (probably used by the cutler.). After Thomas died in 1823/4 his wife Sarah took over the business (in various directories as a cutler) followed by his sons Thomas Plummer Addison and Robert Addison. Thomas Plummer Addison migrated to South Australia in 1838. Our family is descended from him. Robert was a file cutter and in prison as a bankrupt in 1841. Later he became a surgeon. He died in 1863 and was described then as an Accoucheur.
I am wondering (considering the Plummer connection) if Thomas was by chance the brother of Rev Robert Addison. You mention in your website that Rev Robert stayed with his brother Thomas in 1788 at Hampstead. *(Thomas ADDISON* born in 1752 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK christened on 19 Jan 1752.) Do you know any more about this Thomas Addison?
We have not been able to connect our family yet to the Addisons of Westmorland and of course the family said we are descended from Joseph Addison who as far as I know had no children. The son of T P Addison (Arthur Richman Addison) used a coat of arms for Addisons but I strongly suspect he was not entitled to it.
Diana Comments 2011:
- I suspect the burial at St Leonards, Shoreditch in January 1824 is of my Thomas Addison as he worked and probably lived in Holborn and his will was proved in June 1824. Certainly his wife Sarah and his sons Thomas Plummer and Robert lived there later.
I have not been able to discover where Thomas lived, worked or his occupation before 1812. His son Robert was born in Middlesex St John (could be Hampstead or maybe Westminster). The marriage register 1801 says 'of this parish' (St Leonard Shoreditch).
I have the will of Sarah Plummer's sister Ann a spinster of Whittlesey written 1828. In it she mentions a sister Mary Hodges. There is a marriage of Mary Plummer and Richard Hodges at St Leonards Shoreditch 1810 where the witnesses are Thomas and Mary Addison. (If these are husband and wife they are not mine, but perhaps brother and sister???)
Rev Robert's first wife would be I think a second cousin of my Sarah Plummer.
I would be very happy to hear from you again if you have any further information about the Thomas on your tree born 1752. I also wonder why you say he lived and died in Hampstead? I have found the birth of the daughter of Rev Robert born there but can find no mention of Thomas.
There seem to be too many coincidences (Plummer, Whittlesey, date & age at death etc) for them not to be the same person but it is frustrating not to have proof.
Thomas married Sarah PLUMMER, daughter of Robert PLUMMER and Mary ELSOME Plummer, on 6 Jun 1801 in Hackney, St. Leonard Parish Shoreditch, Middlesex UK. Sarah was born in Oct 1771 in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, UK and died on 28 Dec 1861 in Lambeth, Middlesex, UK aged 90.
Children from this marriage were:
+ 67 M i. Living
+ 68 M ii. Thomas Plummer ADDISON was born in 1804 in Hampstead, UK.
46. Reverend Robert ADDISON 2 (John7, John6, Robart5, Christopher4, John3, John2, Robert1) was born on 6 Jun 1754 in Levens, Westmorland, UK,18 was christened on 6 Oct 1754 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK, died on 6 Oct 1829 in Niagara On The Lake, Ontario aged 75, and was buried on 9 Oct 1829 in St Marks Church, Niagara On The Lake, Ontario.
General Notes: Reverend Robert Addison was a Society for the Propagation of the Gosphel in Foreign Parts (SPGFP) missionary to the Mohawks, stationed at Niagara, Upper Canada (1791-1829). As well as his missionary duties, he founded churches throughout the Niagara region, including St. Mark's, Niagara-on-the-Lake, where he is buried. He's cited in both early and recent editions of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and he and his work have been the subject of a number of articles and pamphlets.
Rev Robert was the third son of John and Ellinor (Parkinson) of Plumbtreebank. From a 1933 Newspaper article "he was born in the year 1754, probably in the old gray stone house of two storeys, named Moss-side, in the parish of Levens, Westmoreland". While the description of the family home appears accurate, it is believed that the name of the family home was Birk's Cotttage.
From his Biography by Habermehl and Combe, he entered Cambridge 17 June 1777 at the age of 23, relatively late in life for a scholar. He attended Trinity College (Cambridge), 1777-1781, where he completed his BA and was ordained a Deacon of the Church of England in Norwich, Norfolk 11 March 1781. Before completing his final year, he married Mary Atkinson on 24 October 1780 in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Mary is believed to have been a descendant of Bishop Ridley by her mother.
Details of Robert's life from 1783 - 1791 are sketchy. In February 1781 he was licenced as curate of the parish of Upwell, Cambridgeshire, near Peterborough, at 45 pounds a year. Robert and Mary's first son William was born in Whittlesey in Sept 1781 but only lived for a month. A daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1784 and was christened at Whittlesey. It is believed that Robert left the ministry for a while and worked as a tutor while he continued his studies. He was awarded his MA in 1785.
By 1789 Robert was living in Hampstead, near London and possibly in the vicinity of his brother Thomas. Thomas had married Sarah Plummer of Whittlesey, possibly a cousin of Robert's wife Mary. It is known that Rev Robert lived in Shelford Lodge, a grand house in Hampstead, owned possibly by Edward Montagu, and a property held "under the church of Westminster" as there are records for "Occupant tax" payments as a tenant of the leaseholder, in 1789 and 1790. Robert also reportedly had an academy in Hampstead and tutored students for entrance into Cambridge. There are also records in the Hampstead Parish Register of Robert announcing Banns of marriage in 1789.
A second daughter Mary Eleanor, was born to Robert and Mary and was baptised in Hampstead in 1790. It is believed that Mary was born in 1788. It is not clear if the mother was his first wife Mary or a second wife; perhaps another Mary. Later, after Rev Robert arrived in Canada, a second son was born in January 1792. This child may have also been born by Addison's second wife.
In 1791 Rev Robert applied to the Church of England's SPGFP for missionary work and was accepted for a position in May of that year. He was only the second Protestant clergyman to venture into Upper Canada, the first being Anglican Rev John Stuart, who arrived in Cataraqui (Kingston) in 1786. Robert sailed for Canada in the summer of 1791 and arrived in Quebec in September. Apparrently he was seasick for most of the crossing and for that reason never did return to England, although he requested permission of the Society to return to visit family several times.
It appears Rev Robert travelled to Canada alone. His (second) wife Mary, who was pregnant when he left for Canada, remained in England and is believed to have suffered from depression. She died, likely in the 1788 to 1792 time frame and possibly in childbirth. However, there is a record for a death of Mary Addison, "wife of Rev Robert Addison" in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire in 1809. The second son, Robert died of smallpox while living with Rev Robert's family in Heversham 12 Jan 1797.
After wintering in Quebec City, Rev Robert arrived in Niagara-on-the-Lake, or Newark as it was then called, in 1792. When Robert arrived in Niagara he settled in a house on Lot 8 on Front Street. His name remained associated with this property until 1808. Later in 1795 he moved about three miles outside town near an old mill where he built a home, Lake Lodge, on the shore of Lake Ontario. This house still stands today, having been restored by its present owner. Minister's salaries were small in those days and Robert farmed as well as tended to his clerical duties. He travelled by boat along the lakeshore or by horseback along the forest trails to reach his parishoners between Niagara and Dundas. In his first year in Newark he opened a school and then set about establishing St Mark's Church.
By the fall of 1792, Rev Robert had been joined in Newark by his sister Mary Addison, daughters Elizabeth, then about 8, daughter Mary, about 5 and a possible governess for the girls named Rebecca Plummer, age about twenty. The fact that this young lady was a Plummer suggests that she was likely related to Rev Robert's mother in Law and namesake, Rebecca Plummer Atkinson. When Rev Robert arrived in Newark in 1792 the government of Upper Canada was located at Newark, until it was moved to York in 1796. As a young missionary he became Chaplain of the Legislature. He was the only resident Anglican clergyman, in fact the only clergy man west of Kingston and built the first church in Upper Canada to have regular services, St. Marks, at Niagara-on-the-Lake. This church was completed in 1809. During the War of 1812 it was burned, and restored finally in 1826, as it is to-day.
In 1794 Rev Robert was discouraged with the lack of financial assistance provided to him and considered moving to Nova Scotia as it was a more established community. In 1796 he was the Chaplain of the House of Assembly (the provincial legislature) for which he recieved $100 a year and by 1798 was being provided 100 pounds per annum for his missionary work.
Before 1809, Rev Robert had preached in the Masonic Hall and other places. He ministered to Indians and whites from Fort Erie to the Grand River, preaching at intervals to the Mohawks in their church near Brantford, built in 1786. His Niagara congregation included Col. and Mrs. John Butler, Hon. William Dickson, General Brock, Hon. Robert Hamilton Secord, the Jarvis Family and others. During the War of 1812 he was chaplain of the British and Canadian forces, and, it is said, during his imprisonment by American troops, he ministered to them. In October 1813 he conducted General Sir Isaac Brock's funeral services in Fort George.
As stated above there Robert may have taken a second wife, possibly during his time in Hampstead, England although this is, as yet, unconfirmed. It is known that he did marry again once in Upper Canada, to the governess, Rebecca Plummer in 1811 in Toronto. She was a spinster cousin of his first wife and had also accompanied Robert's sister Mary and his daughters and stayed on to look after the family in Niagara, when sister Mary returned to Westmorland, eventually to marry John Moon in 1815.
Rev Robert, as well as being a clergyman, was an entrepreneur. When the church could not pay him wages for his services rendered to the province he accepted grants of land in the Niagara area. He petitioned for other land grants in lieu of salary and eventualy owned substantial land holdings across the province including lots in the township of Niagara, Stamford, East Flamborough, Dereham, Walsingham, Wawanosm and Deer Park in Toronto. On his death in 1829 he had some 6000 acres of Norwich land in his name. He left the management of this property to his widow, Rebecca.
Rev Robert brought the first library or collection of books of any significance to Canada when he landed in Niagara in 1791. The books were believed to have originally been the property of his father in law, Richard Atkinson (father of first wife Mary) who was the curate of Whittlesey and died in Oct 1781. They were housed in the rectory for many years and then became property of Brock University. They were recently repatriated to St Mark's Church, Niagara on the Lake where they will be housed in a Library to be built in the Church hall which will be named Addison Hall in his memory.
Rev Robert's Grave site is at St. Mark's Church, Niagara (formerly Newark). Info from their pamphlet (about 1965) 'On entering the Church, note the Addison Tablet, and the case of historical items on the left, and the Creen Tablet on the right.' 'The first Rector's remains are interred under the stone tablet on the west side of the north transept outside, having been placed there when the basement was excavated. It is believed that he was first buried under the Altar when he died in 1829, but was moved when the church was renovated and a large addition added in 1834. The precise location of his remains has become a bit of a mystery and the subject of some debate.
Robert married Mary ATKINSON Addison,2 daughter of Rev Richard ATKINSON 2 and Rebecca (RIDLEY) PLUMMER Atkinson,2 on 24 Oct 1780 in Cambridge All Saints, Whittlesey, Cambridge, UK.27 Mary was born in 1761, was christened on 17 Sep 1762 in St Mary's Church, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, UK,28 died in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, UK, and was buried on 17 Feb 1809 in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Wm Addison (signature and seal)
This writing contained in two sheets of paper was signed, sealed, and published and declared by the Testator William Addison as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us
(there is another line and perhaps signatures on this page but they were overlooked in the copying.)
His will written 28 Feb 1839, is signed in a very shaky hand. He would have been 82 at the time. According to David Taylor, in the 1841 Census he and wife Eleanor were listed as living with his youngest son, Peter, at Birk's Cottage. Verified correct with Robert Philipson also living there as an Apprentice.
