In Their biography of Rev Robert Addison, the authors (Fred and Donald) quote a letter written by Rev Arthur P. (Scholey) Addison regarding his great-grandfather (presumably William Addison, but likely John Addison)'s house in Levens. The letter reads. "My great-grandfather was born in the house...right in the village and the back of the lot ran down to the moor where they had, for generations cultivated willows for basket weaving. It was a thatched cottage with an open hearth for heating and cooking, clay floor for the most part, and mainly one floor, though there was a loft in which some of the children slept. The cottage carried the right of cutting peat in a certain place. It was their only source of heat and the main source of light. My father (Rev Peter Addison (1831)) had a very vivid and happy remembrance of the long winter evenings, the peat fire made up, all the family weaving baskets and one of them duly appointed lay on the floor with the book turned toward the fire reading. When this was done the father (presumably John Addison, explained what had been read, answered questions and then after the reading fo the lesson and evening prayer they all went to bed at the same time...Grandmother kept the house, cooked and cleaned for the family, brewed the ale and helped and encouraged all the others."
