My Fisher line dates back to the early 1500s in Barrow-in-Furness just over the county boundary in what was Lancashire and is now Cumbria. Isabella and William Hogg’s daughter Jane married Richard Wilkinson and their daughter Sarah Agnes Wilkinson married Joseph Fisher thus making her my great great grandmother.

From George Addison, Dad's sister Margaret was very well known as a leader for post-secondary education for women. She became the Dean of Women at Victoria College, University of Toronto and was the head of Ansley Hall, the women's residence. She retired in 1932 and died in 1940.

George Addison of Toronto stated "My father's only brother practist medison (sic) on Broadview Ave. here in Toronto ,and worked on public health commitee, and was responsible for brinning pasturized milk to Toronto." This was William Addison, as confirmed by his nephew, Rev George Addison who wrote in an e-mail in May 2003, "Dr. W.L.T. Addison (William Lockwood Thornton) was my great-uncle Will, son of Rev. Peter, brother of Margaret, Charlotte and my grandfather. (Bill is Will's grandson). He had a practice on Broadview, where Rev. Peter, his father, lived in his retirement. You might look up a full-page article in the Toronto Star , March 15, 1924, celebrating Rev. Peter's life and career. He died age 94 shortly after appearing on the platform at the founding of the United Church of Canada in 1925."
In Thomas Powley Addison's medical records there is a short letter from a Dr W.L.T. Addison, releasing the body of Thomas Powley Addison to the undertaker presumably after conducting the autopsy on Thomas Powley which determined that he died of endocarditis. It is almost a certainty that W.L.T Addison was in fact William Lockwood Thornton, and a distant relative of Thomas Powley.
The 1911 Census has this Addison family living at 451 Langley Ave in Toronto East. There is also a record of William registering his son Peter's 1907 birth in 1927.
William's death certificate is very informative, giving his address as 431 Broadview, Toronto, place as death (same), birthdate as 30 April, 1870, wife's name Janie, Parents names Peter Addison and Mary Ann Campbell, date of death 4 Sept 1930 cause of death Cerebral Hemorage and place of burial as Mt Pleasant Cemetery.

Austen was bequeathed his father's homestead in Summerville. Apparently he was 'under age' at the time because court records show that a sale of this farm to Thomas Arthur was sanctioned by the court and the money paid into court for Austen. Austen moved to Windsor and worked in the Ford plant there. He became blind and lived with his son Max and made beautiful leather articles. Juanita has a wallet made by him in dark brown leather. Apparently there were hard feelings in the family over the sale of the farm while Austen was under age. While Juanita was doing research she was in contact with Max Addison's son and he was less than enthusiastic about the Otterville Addisons!

General Notes: From Ms Mott's History - Byron operated the funeral home in Norwich, a business which was originally started in the 1850s by his father William. Byron and his wife (Mary Jane) Minnie lived for many years in the attractive frame house west of the United Church. He built the large brick house on Main Street just west of his former home.
Byron's daughters, May, Mrs. Nelson Hicks, of Detroit, Laura who died recently in Detroit and Eva, Mrs. Joe Mitchell a competent business woman, who lives in Leaside.

Their son Wilfrid and his sons Donald and Richard are carrying on the well known undertaking and furniture establishment today. Their mother, Mrs. Wilfrid Addison, is an officer in the Oxford County Executive of the Women's Institute. The others in Charles Edward's family are Kenneth of Brantford, Vernon of Simcoe and Clara (Mrs.James) of Dorchester. Mrs. James is well known in Norwich Village, having lived here for several years.

There was a bit of a local scandal because they already had about 6 kids when they got married - the first wife had run off with the baby early in the marriage never to be heard of again and I suppose this presented a problem in re marriage. In the photo that Bob sent me, you would think that Grandpa was the groom as he is in the centre of the picture.

General Notes: William emigrated to Canada with his parents and younger brother Joseph in 1871 and settled in Norwich, Ont. In 1881 after the death of his mother the boys and their father moved to Manitoulin Island. At age seventeen, while working with fishermen at Duck Islands William drowned. His father walked the shores in the area for days in the hopes of finding his body. His body was never recovered but the following spring the sleeve of a man's coat was found in a fish net, although it could not be identified as his. His name is recorded on his father's tombstone in the Silver Lake Cemetery.

General Notes: Joseph came to Canada with his parents in 1871 and settled in Norwich, Ontario in 1872. In 1881 after his mother died he moved north to Manitoulin Island with his father. He took over the farm from his father when his father died in 1921 and ran it until the late 1920s when his eldest son Edgar (Ted) took it over. In the 1901 Census he is listed as single, but head of the family living with his father and brother (Edgar) Richard. Eventually when the second son Jack (Lori Mastelko's grandfather) got married Joseph divided the farm between the two sons.
Joseph was also the Indian Constable and it was his job to keep the peace on the Shechegwaning Reserve, about seven miles from Silver Water. He was an accomplished carpenter and built boats for use on Silver Lake. His nickname was "Smash" which he got for his acting in a play when he hit a fellow actor over the head.
Joseph married Lucinda MAY Addison,2 daughter of Humphrey Philip Alexander MAY and Dorcas Jane FRANKLIN May, on 24 Jul 1901 in Silverwater, Manitoulin Island, ON. Lucinda was born on 4 Oct 1874 in Little Current, Manitoulin Island, ON241 and died on 18 Sep 1950 in Manitoulin Island, ON aged 75.

General Notes: (Richard) (Edgar) Edward was the first of the family to be born in Canada, in Norwich, Ont. When his mother died he was put into a foster home. He moved north to be with his father and brothers sometime after 1881. He was drowned when the frieghter Jones capsized coming from Owen Sound to Manitoulin Island in 1906. Hie was thirty three. His body was recovered the following spring through the ice.

The body found on the east shore of Christian Island by Indians a week ago last Sunday has been brought to an undertaking establishment in Penetang and has been positively identified as the remains of R.E. Addison, of Silverwater, Manitoulin Island, a passenger on the ill-fated steamer, Jones, which went down near Cape Croker on November 22, with every soul on board. A brother Chan. Addison of Durham and C.E. Addison of Otterville identified the body. Addison ran a threshing machine in the summer and worked in the lumber camps in the winters. He was unmarried.
From Bert: (Edgar) Edward, whose body was found off Christian Island, was born in Norwich,Ont. in 1873. When his mother died he lived with foster parents until he was old enough to join his father and older brothers in Silver Water. The brother who identified his body was Charles James Addison who had lived in the Norwich area all his life. He had been brought up by foster parents, but kept his own name.

One Man Succumbs to His Injuries Another Man Horribly Scalded and May Not Recover
One of the most frightful accidents that has occured on the island for many years, happened in Silver Water on the 11th inst., in which Frank Guinn, a young and respected man of about twenty years of age, met a horrible and untimely death. Another young man, James Hazzard , is likely to die from scalds and wounds, and two others B. Addison and a young man by the name of Cronk, were injured slightly.
It was shortly after noon on Friday that the mill hands in the employ of James Crawford, were gathered around the boiler room awaiting the starting of the mill for the afternoon run, when suddenly the huge boiler lept into the air like a thing of life, belching forth at the same time a torrent of scalding water and steam, turning topsy turvy the boiler landed some twenty feet away on the rollway, while sixty feet away, writhing in agony, were the young men who had been blown that distance by the force of the escaping steam.
Frank Guinn, who came to Silver Water in the spring of 1908, made a host of friends there, being of a quiet disposition that invaribly wins friends in any community. He only survive d the accident a few hours.
James Hazzard has been in Silver Water for over a year, stopping wi th his brother Wesley. The sad part about his case is having lost an arm a few years ago through an accident. He is still quite a young man, being only about twenty years of age, and even if he recovers from the recent calamity will be severely handicapped through life. Latest reports say he is still living and making a gallant fight against the grim monster, and, as he is known to be full of grit, it may help him to pull through.
Barney Addison is injured slightly, having refuse blown in his eyes, which was removed by Dr. Johnston who left in haste for the scene of the disaster. The peaceful little settlement of Silver Water is plunged in the deepest gloom over the lamentable catastrophe. Possibly nothing has occurred in its history to occasion so much genu ine regret. It was in the summer of 1901 that the boiler in the Burpee mill blew up, killing three men.
Mr. James Crawford, owner of the Siver Water Mill, is deserving of sympathy. He only recently purchased the boiler from Mr. Wright of Petrolia. It was previously used by Messrs. Buchanan & Brake in their drilling operations in Silver Water and Gore Bay, and it will mean a loss to M r. Crawford of several hundred dollars.

George Gibson ADDISON Wase was not the son of John and Jennie Wase. After several years they had given up hope of having children and adopted George from Jennie's cousin (Addison), whose mother had died leaving the father with many small children. George married Carrie and they had a son George Jr. Later he married Hazel Babcock in 1929. George's brother was Charles Addison of Vanessa, whose soon Bruce is still a resident of Vanessa.
My deduction is that George Addison Wase was the son of George Gibson Addison, whose wife Elizabeth died in 1881 and left him with several young children, one of which was named George and who was two when his mother died.
Ancestry Email from Francine J. Crouchley: Two boarder crossings into the US from British Columbia. One George Addison Wase is sending his son George Carlyise (sp?) Wase to his mother Carrie in 1921. The second boarder crossing from the same location of George Addison Wase in 1923 listing nearest relative as Edmond. Something happened to Carrie but I have no idea what. I haven't looked for her on the 1920 census. George A. Wase on the 1930 is m. to a different woman but George C. Wase shows at age 15. George C. Wase was my ex-father in law. He applied for a name change. It appears he was using Carlye and not George or maybe his father was. Anyway he had it changed and became a US citizen in 1944. He passed away in 1989. He has 2 living sons who were not aware he was born in Canada - I spoke with one of their bothers from a previous marriage/same mother and he said George Carlyle Wase was adopted.

General Notes: Ambrose Peter Moon Addison wrote two letters to his relatives in Canada in 1944. He was trying to contact descendants of his Uncle George Gibson Addison, who he knew had immigrated to Canada from Devonshire in 1871. In the letters he mentioned his parents, Robert and Susan who were from Willsworthy, Devon. He also mentions his other uncles, Peter of Clapham, Devon who married Selena (Marjorie's Great Grandmother), Jim of Southport, Lancashire, (who was Herbert Powley's father), Nicholas of Beathwaite Green and Joe of Willsworthy, Devon, as all deceased by 1944. His father Robert he says, died in 1941 at the age of 96. Peter mentions that he lost his wife (Ilija) in Aug 1943 and that he was living in Somerset at the time. His daughter was living in Oxford with her husband who was a surveyor for the borough of Abingdon. They had a son, born in about 1931. He also mentions a sister Margaret Rocliffe, who passed away in 1941-42 and another sister Jenny. In the closing of one letter he refers to himself as named after his grandfather Peter Addison (1804).

The other family member my mother kept in regular contact with was Annie Addison who married a Harry Coles (school teacher), and they had several children, grandchildren, the names Peggy, Bob, Rob, Mary comes to mind. She was around 96 when she died, and one of her addresses was somewhere in Nazing Essex, I believe a Pecks Hill or something, once I dig all this correspondence out I will have better information.
I also believe the Susan Hill who was married to Robert Addison, had a relation living in north petherton had one time a roger hill. The Coles family had sisters living in the village as well they were an Eddie and Polly sisters, I believe one was a Polly Upham.
I would very much like to trace some of the living relations of the Coles family as my mother was in regular contact until Annie died.

General Notes: Thomas Powley was born in Arnside, a village about 3 miles south of Levens, in Westmorland County, UK. His father and mother were from Levens.
At some point before 1907 he and his family moved to Southport, Lancashire. There he met Florence Pillinger (Grannie Hine). Florence's people were from Wiltshire. Aunt Hilda thinks that Thomas may have been a gardener and Florence worked "in service", as a house servant. They emigrated to Toronto in 1907 . He arrived on the SS Canada first in April 1907 and she came across later on the SS Victoria, arriving in Quebec 9 Aug 1907. They were married in Toronto on 22 August 1907. He was 30 and listed his parents as James Addison and Jane Powley and his religion as Methodist. A carpenter, he built the family house at 60 Ferrier St in Toronto. Sons Herbert James and Kenneth Peter were born in 1909 and 1910 and then Thomas died in 1915, two weeks before the birth of Hilda.
There is a family story (from Pat) that he was found one day lying in the street, incapacitated by some unknown malady. Medical records indicate Florence took him to the Reception Hospital which was a sanatorium or mental institution on at 651 Broadview off the Danforth, because of his symptoms. He died several weeks later.
Hilda remembers her mother Florence having him buried in the St. John's Norway Cemetery in East Toronto (Woodbine and Kingston Road). When Hilda was a child she and her mother visited the gravesite regularly to pay their respects. Tim visited his gravesite in 2001 when he was in the area to visit Hilda. His grave is unmarked.
Tim has some of his carpentry tools and a book on housebuilding which he likely used in the building of the house at 60 Ferrier Street.

General Notes: Penelope Messenger states that Peter was a chauffeur by profession. His wife Janie was an early feminist. They lived in Wallasey on the opposite side of the Mersey River from Liverpool.
Peter must have married later in life. In the 1901 Census he was a living in Ulverston, Lancashire on a large estate called Graythwaite. He is listed as a boarder, in a cottage with Tom Whitehead, Ellen Briggs and Mary Lancaster. His birthplace is listed as Silverdale, likely an error. He was employed as a domestic gardner in Slatterwaite. In the 1911 Census he was back living at home, age 33, occupation Chauffeur, born Levens.
Peter married Jane (Janie) UNKNOWN Addison 2 in Apr 1911 in Southport, Lancashire, UK. They had no children.

General Notes: Penelope Messenger in her letter states that her Grandparents continued to live in (20 Poulton Road) until 1947 when the family all moved to Nottingham. Her grandmother Mary Elizabeth was an apprentice dressmaker (to a Miss Saul in Southport) at age 14. She was a dressmaker (either from home or in the homes of her customers) for many years. Penelope also states that her grandmother remembered spending holidays at Levens, presumably with her grandparents.
In later years Mary Elizabeth loved patchwork and said that she had been taught by her Grandmother who she visited at Levens. She implied that her grandmother worked as Levens Hall and that her grandfather was a gardener there.
