General Notes: John appears to have emigrated to Canada in the 1850s and married Mary in Scarborough in 1859. The marriage certificate lists him as, 35 born in Beathwaitegreeen, Westmorland England, parents Thomas and Margaret. He died in a wagon accident in Oro in 1867, according to an article in the Northern Advance 17 Oct 1867.
Thursday the 10th Dr Crookshank held an inquest on the body of John Addison of the township of Oro, aged about 40, who was thrown from his waggon on about the 5th while racing on the highway. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased was returning from Barrie, on the Saturday previous, in a state of intoxication, and in charge of a double team, that when near Richardson's farm, on the Penatanguishine road, he commenced racing with another team and when opposite Robinson's farm, the wagon was overturned, dashing the unfortunate man suddenly and violently to the ground. When lifted he was found insensible. He never rallied and expired on the morning of the 9th. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his untimely end. The following verdict was returned. "We find that the deceased, John Addison came to his death by being thrown from his waggon while racing on the highway and believe that the accident was caused by his being run off the road by one Alexander Watson, who prevented him from passing." The jury strongly censored the practice of horse racing on public roads.

Emails from Edward J. Armbrust.
(1) My grandmother's grandfather was William Addison (born 1823 in Westmorland) who married Sarah Irvin(e). (2) The birth date for William as listed in my grandmother's Birthday Book is 23 Oct 1823. She had the habit of putting down the year also. He married Sarah in Toronto and I suspect before coming to Simcoe County. Unfortunately, his parents are not listed on the marriage record.
(2) I have a great deal of information regarding the descendants of William Addison and Sarah Irvin(e) that I am willing to share if you go that far astray. Their daughter Eleanor married Clarence Rhyndress (my grandmother's parents).
(3) I have lots of stuff of William and Sarah's descendants which I could gather together and send but I suspect it would probably be best to wait until we are able to verify that he belongs to your Westmorland families.
(4) William Addison was born in Westmorland according to his cemetery monument in the Bethesda Congregation Church Cemetery, Edgar, Simcoe Co. He came to Canada (York County) about 1850. He married a Sarah Irving in Toronto and they went to Simcoe Co. about 1860. Unfortunately his marriage record does not give his parents nor does the church know. Because of his Westmorland birth I consulted your web site and found only one William with an estimated birth years that fit my William (s/o Thomas and Margaret Richardson). I obtained the baptismal records for all their children you have mentioned plus I found one more. Based on your information and the baptismal records I am fairly certain that I have determined William's parents. Thus, this adds one more Westmorland Addison that came to Canada. William and Sarah had nine children in Canada so you can expect lots of Canadian descendants and I have lots of information on them.
(5) Mention in a book about the history of Scarborough that both Robert and William Addison participated in a ploughing contest that beat the Whitby team in 1849. William is not in the 1851 census but this is probably the Robert listed with the others.
I also have the following items that might be of interest to you if you have not already seen them.
1861 census (Oro) of Thomas, household which inclues their child Margaret , and a Mary which appears to be listed as a non family member. However, her surname is Addison, She may have been listed as a non-family member meaning not a part of the Thomas Addison family. I think it is his sister.
1861 Census (Oro) of John's household which includes wife Mary and child Elizabeth.
1851 Census (York) which has Robert and Elizabeth, both single, but in the same log house, and Thomas, single in a frame house.
Death announcement of Mrs Thomas Addison formerly of Canada but dying in Kendal. She and maybe her husband (but not sure on the husband) returned to England after the death of their daughter Margaret.

From Landmarks of Toronto, volume 3, p.395 ff, by John Ross Robertson, submitted by Marcie Lawrence. I checked with the church archives and there is nothing listed other than their names. No parents or witnesses are mentioned.

108. Thomas TAYLOR 2 (Richard TAYLOR9, Agnes ADDISON Taylor8, John7, John6, Robart5, Christopher4, John3, John2, Robert1) was born in 1800.
General Notes: According to David Taylor: Jenny (Jane) HIGH's brother, Richard TAYLOR, had a son Thomas TAYLOR (born 1800) who married Jane POWLEY in 1826. By 1841 Thomas & Jane were living at Gilpin Cottage in the Lyth valley. After the 1851 census, apart from the eldest son John - of whom more below - nothing more is heard of any of these Taylors (apart from Richard's probable burial in 1856). They were not married or buried in any local parish, & I cannot find them in any English census. It is very likely that some, at least, went to Canada - as so many families did so from Levens in the 1840's and 1850's. One exception was the eldest son John (b 1827) who in 1891 was a widower in Paddingdon, London, England. But he also had a visitor - Robert Addison (26), a schoolmaster, born in Canada. This must have been one of the Taylor family's Canadian relatives.
Thomas married Jane POWLEY Taylor,2 daughter of John POWLEY 2 and Jane BOWNASS Powley,2 in 1826 in Beathwaitegreen Wesleyan Methodist Chuch. Jane was born on 18 Feb 1804 in Kendal, Westmorland, UK and was christened on 12 Mar 1804 in Wesleyan Methodist Church, Beathwaite Green.

General Notes: According to David Taylor, Agnes and James Stainton emigrated to Canada.
Agnes married James STAINTON,2 son of Richard STAINTON 2 and Ellen TOMLINSON Stainton,2 in 1844 in Heversham Church, Westmorland, UK.119 James was born on 16 May 1822 in Beathwaitegreen, Westmorland, UK and died in 1902 in Levens, Westmorland, UK aged 80.

General Notes: Richard had a wife and three children. David Taylor believes that Richard, his parents and his two brothers and their wives Agnes and Mary,(Hey) Stainton all emigrated to Canada in the 1840-50s. The sisters took their grandmother Jane (Jenny) Hey with them.
Notes from David Taylor: Soon after this (1855) they (Richard and family) left for Canada. 2 correspondents found them in the 1861 Canadian Census - Canada West, Durham Co., Cavan Township, pg 73, film C-1015 - parents & John Kitching HEIGH (one correspondent also had William, 2). They are also in the 1871 Census - District 51, East Durham, Township of Cavan, Division 4, p29-30, parents & son John (20), William (13), Joseph (9), Elizabeth (7), & Sarah HEIGH. In the 1881 Census, at Durham East, there is a HEA family - parents Richard & Agnes, William (21), Joseph (18), Elizabeth (16), Sarra (14), & Emma (9).

General Notes: From David Taylor, Henry was born to Jenny out of Wedlock. His father was William Penny. David considers that John Addison (1811) was almost certainly the witness at Henry Watson Taylor's marriage at Heversham on 6 Nov 1851. He may have also been the best man.
Henry married Mary BUGGINS Taylor 2 in 1851 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK. Mary was born in 1825 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England and died in 1884 in Liverpool, UK aged 59.

John is listed in the 1841 Census as a gardener, aged 30 living with his parents. In the 1851 Census he is living in the other side of the post office with his mother Margaret, listed as a widow and sister Margaret, who is listed as a grocer.

David considers that since all the Taylors had left the area the aunt was Margaret Addison Philipson and her daughters.
Also from David... I have assumed that it was this Jane (1803-04) who married Thomas Taylor 25 Dec 1826 - though there is no absolute proof; both were 'of this parish'. Margret (sic) Addison was one of the witnesses.
Margaret married Robert PHILIPSON 2 in 1852 in Levens, Westmorland, UK.15 Robert was born in 1822 in Levens, Westmorland, UK and died in 1902-1911 in Levens, Westmorland, UK aged 80.

General Notes: James came to Canada in 1848 (possibly returned and then came back to Canada a second time in 1864) with his younger brother Peter. The last paragraph of Stella Mott's history mentions James T Addison, a brother of Peter the Methodist Minister, lived in Dereham, presumably all his life. He may have had a second wife after Harriet. At the tine of his death in 1908 he was listed as a widower.
James married Margaret UNKNOWN Addison 133 about 1850 in Dereham, Ontario. General Notes: From Carol Ann Massey:
ROBERT ADDISON (person 60 on your family) may have married ANN MASON in 1860. There is an Ann Mason born in 1837 in Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmoreland listed on the IGI Family search website. There is also a marriage listing for a Robert Addison and Ann Mason on Freebmd but this has a date of 1850 rather than 1860. I had still to check this further.
On the 1881 census listings the children of Robert and Ann are listed in slightly different order than the way you have them with their ages notes as:-
William 20
Mary 15
Thomas 14
Maria 12
Robert 11
Lucy 8
Lily 5
Charles 4
James 2
A point of interest here is that Mary is listed as a scholar which is high for the time as children tended to leave school around 12 and is especially high for a girl.

William Addison was a cabinet maker and a funeral director. William built and lived in the house in Norwich where Dr Hall lived. He also built the one next door to it.
Patrick DeRoo Notes for WILLIAM ADDISON:
William was a cabinet maker and funeral director in Norwich. He lived in the brick house across from the United Church where Dr. Hall later lived, and also made a home for his father Robert where the older man resided til his death.
There is an interesting account in the files on microfilm of the Tillsonburg library for the ' Tillsonburg Liberal ' and ' Observer ' for November 24, 1909. dateline is Otterville....
" What might have been a fatal accident occurred this morning while William Addison of the village of Norwich was walking on the Grand Trunk Railway tracks on his way home from Albert Snyder's to the station to take the train to for Norwich, his old home. As he was just about at the Otterville crossing, he heard the train coming and stepped outside the track as he supposed far enough for the train to miss him. He slipped and fell and before he could get his balance again, the train had struck him and knocked him to one side a distance of several feet. A number on the station platform saw the accident and rushed to the scene along with the train which had struck him. It was found that his right arm was broken in two places just below the elbow and the arm quite badly cut in three places, nine stitches in all having to be taken. He is also suffering from great pain from the arm and a severe bruise of the hip. Mr. Addison is one of the oldest residents in Norwich being in his 83rd year."
Regrettably William died 2 days later. The registration of his death says that he was a widower and a retired undertaker and that he died in 26 Nov 1909 in Otterville of shock as a result of being hit by a GTR train.

General Notes: George Gibson was born on July 28, 1832 in Levens. His second name Gibson was obviously a tribute to his mother's Gibson family heritage. He was fairly well educated for the day, having attended college for a time in London-specializing in Music. The 1861 Census shows he was a Schoolmaster in Levens. George taught school in the Isle of Man for approx. five and a half years and married Elizabeth Herd of Kenton, England in 1867. He also played the organ in the church in Levens when he was young.
From an entry related to the probate of his father Peter's will on 12 May 1871, at that time George Gibson and family were living on Cowick Street, St. Thomas and he was a Railway Porter. This detail is confirmed in the 1871 Census for St Thomas. Shortly thereafter and perhaps using the money he inherited, George Gibson emigrated to Canada, arriving in Quebec 31 July 1871 on board the SS Austrian. George Gibson brought his family to Upper Canada in 1872, first to Norwich, Ontario with their two sons William (1868) and Joseph (1869). They lived in Norwich for a few years and this is where Edward Richard (1873), Charles (1876), Barnes (1877), George (1879) and Margaret were born. Elizabeth (George's wife) died in 1879. George Gibson and his two eldest boys moved up to Manitoulin Island in 1881 and settled in Robinson Township (Silver Water) and started farming. The other children lived with relatives and in foster homes. A note on the history of the schools of Manitoulin states that when it could not be agreed as to where the first school should be built George Gibson purchased the logs that had been cut for the first school and used them to build his first home.
It is said that when George Gibson's eldest son William died he walked the shores for over a year searching for his body but it was never found. George Gibson died on June 25, 1921 and is buried in the Silver Lake Cemetery, in Silver Water on Manitoulin Island.

In the 1881 census Peter and Selena are listed as living at Clapham, in Kenn, Devon and having 8 children. Also of interest, another relation Joseph Addison, listed as 28 years old, born in Levens and married was staying with them at the time of the census. This was likely his younger brother, last son of Peter (1804). The fifth child, John, born 1872, was Marjorie's grandfather. She has a copy of Peter and Selena's marriage certificate. In the 1891 Census the family has a domestic servant, Ellen Knight also a niece, born in Tiverton, Devon living with them.
