Hope vs. Wish

Hope vs. Wish

A hope is possible or likely to happen. To express a future desire, hope usually takes a simple present verb.

Example: I hope (that) they get married soon! Janie hopes (that) her new job is interesting.

A wish is a desire that is impossible or unlikely to happen.

Example: I wish I would win the lottery. (2nd conditional grammar structure) (or) I wish I had visited my grandmother before she got sick. (3rd conditional grammar structure for a wish about something in the past.)

When the "to be" verb follows the wish, we use "were" for all subjects. Look at the following examples:

Examples: I wish I were younger. You wish you were a rock and roll singer. She wishes she were rich. We wish we were world travelers. They wish they were movie stars.
