Why I Write For Band

This clinic will be presented by ACB member Dr. Steven L. Rosenhaus, the well-known composer, arranger, conductor and composition professor at New York University. The clinic will include a brief review of my compositional career with emphasis on my band works; a discussion of the band directors and music publishers who have encouraged me in my band-writing efforts, and the geneses of three representative works, "Symphony for Band ('Academy')," "Nine Feet of Brass (A Concerto for Trombone and Band)," and "JFK: A Profile" for narrator and band (or orchestra). I will also answer attendee questions as they arise.

Steven L. Rosenhaus (b. Brooklyn, NY) is a composer, arranger, conductor, lyricist, author, dramaturge, educator and clinician, and performer. His concert music has been called “clever, deftly constructed and likable” by The New York Times; the Sächsiche Zeitung (Dresden, Germany) declares it “expressive....Its song-like melodic sequences and balladic aspects give it a lyrical beauty, within a newer soundworld.” His over 250 original works and arrangements are performed by musicians including the New York Philharmonic, the Kansas City Symphony, U.S. military ensembles including the U.S. Navy Band, the U.S. Naval Academy Band, and the Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth (UK), as well as community and educational ensembles. Dr. Rosenhaus' works are in print with Northeastern Music Publications, Keiser Productions, Music-Print Productions, and others. Dr. Rosenhaus is a frequent guest conductor and clinician of service, professional, community, and educational groups. Works for band include "Mysterious Events," "A Joyful Noise" for two euphoniums (or 2 trombones, or one of each) and band, "JFK: A Profile" for narrator and band (or orchestra), "Ayshet Chayil (A Woman of Valor)" for baritone voice and band, and "Nine Feet of Brass (A Concerto for Trombone and Band)." Steven L. Rosenhaus is the author of The Concert Composer's Business Handbook (Rowman & Littlefield, to be published late 2025), and is co-author with Allen Cohen of Writing Musical Theater (Palgrave Macmillan). Dr. Rosenhaus teaches composition at New York University and in master classes around the world.
