Grant Writing Basics

ACB member Sherry C. Spencer, a flutist with the Kirby Band in Nichols, New York, and an experienced grant writer, will present this clinic. Grant writing can seem intimidating, but if you follow the guidelines presented in this clinic, you will feel more confident.  Most grants follow a similar pattern whether you are writing a grant for your community band or a grant for a larger organization.  Many grant providers often offer instructional sessions to applicants to let them know what the providers are looking for.  This clinic will help you improve your grant writing skills and prepare you for your next grant writing opportunity.

Sherry C. Spencer was born in Jonesboro, AR. She attended Pulaski Heights Jr. High School and graduated from Hall High School in Little Rock.  Sherry attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While at the UW-Madison, Sherry met a young man from Racine, WI.  They were married in August 1967 in Little Rock.  Her husband’s work brought the couple to PA, where they currently live. Sherry worked for 33 years as Program Director of the Bradford-Wyoming County Literacy Program, sponsored by the Bradford County Library.  During 23 of these years, she wrote and directed Act 143 grants from the PA Department of Education. This grant became available after a Texas study revealed that one out of five adults in the United States could not read.  Act 143 grants provide funds for adult and family literacy education services throughout the state. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Arts from UW-Madison and a Masters in Adult Education from Elmira College.  Jim and Sherry live in Athens, PA. Sherry plays flute and piccolo with the Kirby Band of Nichols, NY, and has been the grant writer for the band for the past seven years.
