The main setting is Brighton which has a lot of street art and graffiti and a strong indie rock vibe. Brighton is also well known for it's liberal attidude towards identity. These will be key themes throughout the music video as I believe that it reflects my genre and the people who will be watching my music video. My second location will be a recording studio on a houseboat. It will have an indie feeling with it's abundance of retro instruments and a slightly unfinished feel. It looks like somewhere where the band would practice and does not have a corporate feel but instead to the audience it can feel like it's almost a home.
The video opens with the main character opening up a door as he is trying to let us into the music video. This is an intertextual reference to the music video that Surf Curse created which I have taken inspiration from. It will go into shots of the band playing and then the main character next to graffiti as he stares it down. This is to link to the indie Brighton location which is key for my music video as it gives an anchor which I personally believe will allow my audience to make direct links between the video and the style that I'm going for.
The first verse will show some key elements of my music video that I want to demonstrate which will be that the narrative is going to be driven by Thought Beats. I plan to use famous landmarks in Brighton like the upside down house that will fit the lyric “I need a place to stay”. This will allow the audience to understand that the main character doesn't feel like he belongs, his world is inverted. This is just one example of how I will convey this. This will be a key message throughout the music video as I want the audience to relate to the music video and my target audience feel like outsiders. I hope to make my audience feel more attached to the music video by making the feeling relatable. I want to use an intertextual reference to MF Doom as there is a wall mural of Bart Simpson wearing an MF Doom mask in Brighton. It is a striking piece of art and I would like to link the idea that MF Doom covered up his face as does my main character. I beleive this is a good way to tie in the idea of identity and how as a society we can hide behind a mask and that is what MF Doom is famous for.
The main chorus is the lyric “I'm just a freak”. It will be important that I convey the meaning behind this message well. My aim is to have my main character walking backwards in crowded areas, such as Brighton seafront and then I will reverse the clips in post production. I will achieve this by using a gimbal and following him as he walks backwards. This will give the idea that everyone around him is going in a different direction and that he is a freak, at odds with society. On the last “I'm just a freak” my aim will be to have him yell into the camera the lyric “I'm just a freak”. This is intended to emphasise that he is a freak, he is an outsider and he is positively owning this as an attribute. This also shows the link between him and the band, that he is the lead singer. This will be edited together with the band playing instruments. The lighting in the music studio that I want to go for is a purple and blue colour scheme as I am going to use this for one of my core colours for the digipak and social media campaign. These are also colours that feature throughout my music video for example my Alice in Wonderland character will have a purple bow tie.
The outro will include more grafitti that will be key for the concluding of the music video as I want to cement the location of Brighton to the indie rock audience. My final shot will be a roller coaster on Brighton seafront. I will use the post production of key framing to make it appear that the production company logo is riding the roller coaster.
