I live in Brighton and I thought that this would offer me a lot of locations that would fit the indie rock vibe of my song. Brighton has a lot of street art, the Lanes, the Pier and the seafront, all good places to film.
Initially I visited places that I knew had graffiti or wall murals and photographed these. Some of the artwork gave me inspiration straight away. For example, there is a giant mural of Alice in Wonderland on the side of a house in the lanes. When I saw this and saw that her eyes had been painted as two black holes, I immediately thought of the line “black holes cover up my eyes”.
I wandered around the North Lanes of Brighton, photographing the narrow lanes, any artwork or interesting objects that struck me as being at odds with their setting as my song is called “Freaks”.
I then visited the Pier where I found a statue of Frankenstein which I thought might work. I also liked the idea of filming with a Go-Pro on the roller coaster and considered how I could use the bumper cars or other rides to create movement in my video.
Finally, I visited a music studio on a houseboat in Shoreham. It was set up with a drum kit, had loads of guitars, a keyboard and all sorts of instruments scattered around. I tested out the lighting which I loved and it had a smoke machine. I felt that this was an ideal location for the performance element of my music video as again, the houseboat had that indie vibe I wanted.
