2 Timothy 4:1-22
Final Comments to Timothy from Paul
1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Personal Remarks
9 Do your best to come to me quickly, 10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. 12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.
14 Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done. 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.
16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Final Greetings
19 Greet Priscilla and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. 21 Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers and sisters.
22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you all.
The fourth chapter of 2 Timothy stands as one of the most poignant and significant passages in the New Testament, capturing the final words of the Apostle Paul as he faced the end of his earthly journey...Written from a cold Roman prison cell, this letter is not merely a piece of correspondence; it is a spiritual "passing of the torch" from a seasoned general of the faith to his "true son," Timothy...Paul, a man who once lived as a high-ranking Pharisee with an unmatched knowledge of the Old Testament law, had been transformed by a direct encounter with the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus...This transformation led him into three years of solitary revelation in Arabia, where he partook of deep spiritual truths that would form the foundation of his ministry and much of our own learning about Jesus...In this final letter, Paul seeks to ensure that Timothy is fully equipped to carry this Word of Life and his teachings and lessons from his revelation forward into a world that was becoming increasingly hostile to the Gospel...
Paul begins this chapter with a solemn charge, invoking the Presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead...He instructs Timothy to "Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season."...This lesson is vital for every believer: the duty to share the Gospel does not depend on our convenience or the receptivity of the culture...To be "prepared in season and out of season" means to be ready to witness for Christ whether it is popular or unpopular, comfortable or dangerous...Paul understood that the time was coming when people would no longer put up with "sound doctrine," but would instead seek out teachers who told them exactly what their "itching ears" wanted to hear...They would try to turn Jesus' Words and teachings into it would best fit and be rationalized in their own lives...By grounding Timothy in the necessity of patient correction, rebuking, and encouragement, Paul was protecting the integrity of the Good News against the creeping influence of myths and self-serving desires...
Paul would make a foundation of mentorship with Timothy, and Titus...Paul’s relationship with Timothy was unique and deeply personal...Timothy, the son of a Jewish mother and a Greek father, became Paul’s favorite student and a constant companion on his missionary journeys...Paul gave Timothy and Titus—another of his key proteges—the foundation of his own skill set, helping them hone their qualifications to preach the Gospel with courage and clarity...Because Paul was so knowledgeable in Scripture, he was able to teach them how to see Jesus as the fulfillment of every Old Testament prophecy...This mentorship was action-oriented; it involved traveling together, suffering together, and witnessing the radical shift in the early church as animal sacrifices and kosher rituals were replaced by the Grace of the New Covenant...Paul’s investment in these young men ensured that even when he was no longer present, the "Solid Rock" of the Gospel would continue to be preached throughout the Roman Empire...
One of the most moving aspects of 2 Timothy 4 is Paul’s perspective on his own impending death...He writes, "For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near."...There is no fear in his words, only a sense of profound fulfillment...He declares, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."...This is the ultimate goal of the Christian life—to reach the end with a heart that has remained loyal to our Master Jesus...Paul looked forward to the "crown of righteousness" that the LORD, the Righteous Judge, would award him...Crucially, Paul notes that this crown is not reserved for him alone, but for "all who have longed for his appearing."...This lesson reminds us that our endurance in faith is motivated by the hope of the Resurrection and the promise of eternal life with the Father and the Son...
Jesus always taught unity...The Early Apostles knew the power of community and this unity...In his final remarks, Paul lists a group of believers who were instrumental in the spread of the Gospel: Luke, Priscilla, Aquila, Onesiphorus, Erastus, and many others...This list highlights that the mission was never a solo effort...Even as he faced desertion from some, like Demas who "loved this world" and left for Thessalonica, Paul was sustained by the presence of faithful friends like Luke, the "beloved physician."...These early believers worked together to change the narrative of history and spread the Word of Jesus...They witnessed the power of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection firsthand and were willing to face execution and exile to ensure the word reached the Gentiles...Paul mentions that at his first defense, no one came to his support, yet he held no malice, praying that it would not be held against them...This spirit of forgiveness and reliance on the LORD’s strength is a cornerstone of the lessons Paul wanted Timothy to learn...
Perhaps the most comforting lesson in this chapter is Paul’s testimony that "the LORD stood at my side and gave me strength."...Even when he felt abandoned by men, he was never alone...He speaks of being delivered from the "lion’s mouth" and expresses a settled confidence that the LORD would rescue him from every evil attack...For Timothy, who was likely worrying about his teacher’s fate, these words were a "Divine Assurance."...They proved that the Word of God is not chained, even if His servants are...Paul’s final greetings to the brothers and sisters in the faith are a testament to the "Unconditional LOVE" that bound the early church together...As we study these verses two thousand years later, we see why Jesus’ word is still believed and studied today; it was carried by men and women who, like Paul, were willing to give everything for the Him and His Truth...
As Paul concludes with "The LORD be with your spirit. Grace be with you all," he leaves a legacy of sincerity, trust, and courage...He taught Timothy that the "True Gospel" requires us to keep our heads in all situations and endure hardship as good soldiers of Christ...For us today, the lessons of 2 Timothy 4 are a call to examine our own race in life...Are we keeping the faith?...Are we prepared to share the word?...Paul’s transition from the "patterns of this world" as a Pharisee to a "living sacrifice" for Jesus Christ provides the blueprint for our own transformation...By anchoring ourselves in the same beliefs and foundation that sustained Paul in his Roman cell, we can move forward in our own "final miles" with the same hope of the crown of righteousness...These early believers established a foundation that has stood for two millennia, proving that when we walk in the Light, the darkness can never overcome us...
