Having a website can be good for outreach, internal club affairs, and fundraising! Here are our tips for building a successful website:
View it as if you were a parent trying to figure out what the club was about. Even though people who know about robotics may understand it, those who don't may not.
Include directions. Putting pages into sub-categories can help people to find them without cluttering the main menu
Include past data and analysis of robotics.
Take lots of pictures at events and include them! Even taking pictures of your city can come in useful for backgrounds!
Choose a color pallet. I recommend choosing 5 colors. An easy way to do this is to start with 1 bright color, (we chose bright red). Then, take a darker, slightly more neutral version of that color (we used a darker ruby red). If your bright color is a warm tone, next choose a color with a cool tone and vise versa. Pick something neutral and light. Then, take two darker shades of that color. For example, we went with cream white, space gray, and neutralized black. Here are some examples to get you started:
After you've picked your pallet, create graphics for your website. The head editor, Rachel, uses multiple programs to put together graphics including photoshop and Canva, as well as drawing them out beforehand on paper.
After adding graphics, photos, and multiple pages, feel free to add personal touches! You can add pages getting to know specific teams and events, pages devoted to sharing knowledge, pages just for fun, and more! Creativity is key!
Finally, publish your website! You may want to purchase a domain (ours is $12 a year through google domains) and attach it to the website, but it's not mandatory if you're using a platform to host it. Don't be afraid to get feedback and get better!
