Scholarship fund
International Scholarships
ESC and SoA are pleased to offer a scholarship to all qualified overseas shintaido practitioners to attend this event. These scholarships will be offered automatically to all who register during the scholarship application period (1 Jan - 1 May 2024).
These scholarships are intended as a contribution to the cost of travelling to and attending the event. The aim is to encourage as many shintaido practitioners as possible to gather from all over the world. The exact amount of your scholarship will depend on how far you need to travel.
Scholarship Conditions
Scholarships are available to those who:
are of jun-shidoin / shodan rank or higher
are based outside England and so face substantial travel costs
have registered to attend the event and paid the £200 deposit
are current paid-up members of their national organisation
agree to repay any scholarship payment if they cannot attend the event.
Scholarship timetable
The total amount of the scholarship fund is generous, but finite.
Now that early-bird registrations have closed, those who have chosen to accept a scholarship will be notified of the amount shortly.
Automatic scholarships of similar amounts are available to all those who register until 1st May. After that time the Dokan scholarship scheme will close.
If you need more information about the amount of these scholarships prior to registering please contact Charles Burns stating clearly which country you are based in. The aim is for the scholarship to make a substantial contribution to the cost of travelling to the event.
How is this fund possible?
The fund for these scholarship has been set aside from international funds.
When the organisation known as ISC (the International Shintaido College) formally ceased to exist in 2021, it left behind some accumulated funds. These funds came from the profits of previous international events as well as the annual contributions of shintaido instructors all over the world.
These funds were apportioned between ESC and SoA, which then became the two leading organisations responsible for funding shintaido funding and research around the world.
Recognising the exceptional nature of the 2024 international event, and bearing in mind that many shintaido instructors are facing financial challenges in the post-Covid world, both organisations decided to use a substantial portion of these funds to help instructors in distant parts of the world to attend this event.
This represents a rare opportunity to give something back to the international shintaido community.
How do I apply for a scholarship?
When filling in the application form those of jun-shidoin / shodan or above will be asked to choose one of three options:
I would like to accept a scholarship
I would prefer my scholarship to help comebody else
I would prefer not to accept a scholarship
Those who select option 1 will receive a scholarship. Those who select option 2 will not receive a scholarship, but equivalent funds may be used to help somebody else who would otherwise not qualify (eg: based in England or below jun-shidoin / shodan level). Those who select option 3 will not receive a scholarship.
