“Where there is no vision, the people perish” Proverbs 29:18

We were taught to create a vision board. A tangible and graphic representation of how you see your marriage and family in the coming year. A yearly review of this vision board will show you where you are and where you want to go further. We recommend that you do this at the start of every year to keep the family moving forward. That is why we are offering here some practical tips in helping you achieve your family goals:

  • Set realistic and manageable goals

Set aside uninterrupted time to discuss your goals as a couple and as a family. Involving young children by letting them draw their ideal family and what they value as important. As your children grow older, they can be more vocal on the kind of family they want.

  • Focus on the goals and not on the obstacles and challenges in achieving the goals

When setting goals, be optimistic on how you will be able to meet these goals. There may be challenges along the way, but you need to stretch to achieve your goals otherwise, the goal is not worth setting if it is too easy.

  • Stay organized

Find ways to help you stay focused and organized. Would a planner or to do list be helpful? Or a mobile app will be a better tool to organize your goals as you break it down to doable tasks? Situate your vision board in a place you can see it so you are reminded of your goals.

  • Have a support group

Find a support group who can be of help to you so you can remain focused on your vision and goals. This can be a parent, sibling, friend or community servant who has your best intentions at heart.

  • Don’t let others define what matters to you.

It is always easy to get distracted by what other people do or say. Always remember that you are only competing against yourself, your goal is to be better than you were the day before. Avoid loose talk, gossip and scrolling social media feeds so you can maintain your focus.
