The School Chess League South Zone Competition was held on Sunday 25th October at Corpus Christi College. The event attracted 44 players representing 13 different schools.
The Primary School division was convincingly won by Oscar Gao with a perfect score of 7/7, who took the Primary School division first place trophy. Aarnav Gupta took the second place trophy with a score of 6/7, while Eu Jin Khaw was awarded the third place trophy with a score of 5.5/7.
The winning Primary school was Oberthur Primary School, finishing 3 points ahead of second placed Rosalie Primary School. This result qualifies Oberthur Primary School for the SCL Finals, which are being held at Perth Modern School on 9th November. Coming in third place, only half a point behind Rosalie, was Nedlands Primary School. Saint Paul’s Primary School and Harrisdale Primary School came in fourth and fifth place respectively.
The Secondary School division was won by Alex Pimenov with a score of 6.5/7. There was a three-way tie for second place between Anoushka Gupta, Heidi Gstaettner and Ram Manav Soni. After countbacks were taken into consideration, and an exciting blitz playoff match was played, Anoushka was awarded the second place trophy and Heidi received the third place trophy.
The winning Secondary School was Perth Modern School, finishing 12 points ahead of second placed Corpus Christi College. This result qualifies Corpus Christi College for the SCL Finals. Coming in third place was Wesley College.
