The School Chess League Finals was held on Monday 9th November at Perth Modern School. Seven Primary Schools and 3 Secondary Schools competed for the chance to become the WA School Champions for 2020. Congratulations to our winners: Nedlands Primary School and Perth Modern school.
The Primary School division was run as a round robin under a teams format. That means that the players from each school were ranked in approximate playing strength and each school’s board 1 played each other school’s board 1, board 2s played the other board 2s, and so on.
The competition was extremely close. Nedlands Primary School and Oberthur Primary School tied for first place on match points. Due to having a much higher team score, Nedlands Primary School was awarded the the title of 2020 WA Primary Interschool Champions. Third place went to Carmel Primary School, only half a point ahead of Victoria Park Primary School, who came fourth. Rosalie Primary School, Saint Paul’s Primary School and Christ Church Grammar School came in fifth, sixth and seventh place respectively.
The Secondary School Division was run as with Scheveningan Style format. The board 1s played the other board 1s, 2s and 3s. The board 2s played the other board 1s, 2s and 4s. The board 3s played the other board 1s, 3s and 4s. And the board 4s played the other board 2s, 3s and 4s.
Perth Modern School convincingly won the competition and were awarded the title of 2020 WA Secondary Interschool Champions. Second place went to Wesley College, with Corpus Christi College coming third.
