The 2020 SCL Interschool Girls Chess Competition was held at Perth Modern School on Monday 23rd November. The event attracted 21 players in two separate divisions: 11 contestants representing 4 different schools in the Primary Girls division, and 10 contestants representing 1 school in the Secondary Girls division. Both divisions were combined and run as a 7 round swiss.
The Primary Division was won by Nedlands Primary School, winning the title of 2020 Primary Girls Interschool Champions for the second year in a row. Rosalie Primary School placed second, Caladenia Primary School placed third, and Saint Stephen’s School came fourth. Perth Modern School was awarded the title of 2020 Secondary Girls Interschool Champions, also winning it for the second year in a row.
Individually, the event was won by secondary student Heidi Gstaettner with a score of 6.5/7. Second place went to primary school student Emily Zhang with a score of 5.5/7. This was an amazing result for Emily as she finished ahead of every secondary student other than Heidi. Candace Cheng and Anoushka Gupta tied for third place with 5/7, with Victoria Chai finishing in fifth place with 4.5/7. Four players tied for sixth place with 4/7: Kobe Wu, Sophia Sadekova, Senudi De Vas and Rosanne Arul Raja. Senudi’s performance was particularly outstanding as three of the four games she won were against secondary school students.

A big thank you should go to Perth modern School for generously hosting the event, with a very special thank you to their chess coordinator Leanne Ensly, who secured us an excellent venue, and prepared the playing hall.
