Check for Signs and Symptoms

Bonsall Unified School District

School Reopening Task Force

Category 9: Check for Signs and Symptoms

Section 22. Each school has developed and is ready to implement daily symptom and temperature screening of all students, staff, and visitors prior to admitting them to the facility. The plan includes the following elements:

a. Require staff and students who are sick or who have had close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19, consistent with CDPH guidelines, to stay home.

i. Each school has implemented policies that encourage sick staff and students to stay at home without fear of reprisal, and ensure staff, students and students’ families are aware of these policies.

b. Use no-touch thermometers for temperature screenings.

c. During daily screening, inquire if the staff member or student has experienced COVID-19 symptoms recently, and whether anyone in their home has recently experienced COVID-19 symptoms or received a positive test result. If answered in the affirmative, staff will immediately have the individual report to the site’s designated isolation area for more thorough consultation with the health clerk and/or school nurse.

i. Schools will implement an electronic form for parents to submit when COVID-19 symptoms are observed at home, or exposure to a COVID-19 individual has occurred. This information will be received by the health clerk and/or school nurse and shared with site administration.

ii. Temperature checks will be a part of the screening process before the student is admitted to the school campus.

d. Use county temperature and screening criteria maintained and updated by SDCOE in consultation with PHS.

i. If a student is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, staff should communicate with the parent/caregiver and refer to the student’s health history form and/or emergency card.

ii. Send home students and staff with fever, symptoms, or exposure to COVID-19 using the county criteria.

e. Conduct visual wellness checks throughout the day to monitor staff and students for signs of illness.

Section 23. Each school has a plan that describes how it will document/track incidents of possible exposure and notify local health officials, staff, and families immediately of any positive case of COVID-19 while maintaining confidentiality, as required under FERPA and state law related to privacy of educational records. Reference Category 8 for further detail.

Section 24. Each school has developed plans to prevent discrimination against students who (or whose families) were or are diagnosed with COVID-19.

Bonsall Unified School District will prevent discrimination and maintain student and family privacy by:

Providing an isolation area for any student or staff member awaiting pick up.

Maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of those seeking healthcare and those who may be part of any contact investigation.

Quickly communicating the risk, or lack of risk, from contact with products, people, and places. Clarify if there has been “direct contact with” or “possible exposure” to an individual.

Correcting negative language that can cause stigma by sharing accurate information about how the virus spreads.

Speaking out against negative behaviors and statements, including those on social media.

Making sure that images used in communications show diverse communities and do not reinforce stereotypes.

Using media channels, including news media and social media, to speak out against stereotyping groups of people who experience stigma because of COVID-19.

Thanking healthcare workers, responders, and others working on the front lines.

Suggesting virtual resources for mental health or other social support services for people who have experienced stigma or discrimination.
