Research shows that the fact we volunteer and help others makes us happier! If you choose BB/GB as the place to volunteer, that would make us very happy!
Helping out in a Boys' Brigade/Girls' Brigade [BB/GB] group with children and young people can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make; young, old or in-between. We call our volunteers “leaders” because they guide a course for children and young people.
Many of our volunteers say they’ve learned things through their involvement with BB/GB that have helped them to get new jobs or even change career. For example, as well as helping out in a local BB/GB group, you might like to train as a Trainer and help run courses for other volunteers. Once you volunteer there’s a whole world of opportunities for you to participate in within our movement – locally, nationally or internationally
These are all words that our Leaders have used to describe their experience volunteering with the Boys' Brigade.
There are lots of different ways that you can help. We work with boys and girls from all backgrounds and of all faiths, and with those with no faith. Most of our volunteers come along for a couple of hours a week in the evening and get involved with one or more of our four age sections:
Anchors ~ Juniors ~ Company ~ Seniors
We need volunteers to help children with activities, games, sport, arts and crafts, hobbies, music etc. Whatever you can help with is greatly valued. We also want volunteers who will be able to relate to young people and over time, become adults they can trust and talk to
.
Yes! The beauty of volunteering with the BB/GB is that you can be flexible, and if you can only help out once a month, or even once a year at the annual camp then we are happy to welcome you.
You can volunteer from 14+ as a Young Leader, with a wider range of roles for those aged 18+. There’s no upper age limit. We really do welcome applications from all ages.
No – just an attitude that is positive about children and young people, or as we say, have faith in young people. Of course, if you do have skills you can bring then fantastic! However, we value every volunteer just as we value every child and young person.
Some churches where BB/GB groups are based like leaders to be members of that church, but are happy that certain roles are performed by people who are in sympathy with the Christian basis of the BB/GB. Other than that, we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and cultures.
There are many ways to help the company...
A Leader in charge of a Section (Age Group) is a committed Christian, enrolled by the Church and the Brigade
They are trained* and seek to fulfil the BB/GB object with every member.
They are the drive behind their age group
They seek to attend weekly and plan the program.
*We offer Training through the BB/GB (and sometimes other sources) and aim to pay for these Training Courses via BB/GB Funds.
These people are also trained leaders (or people seeking to be trained*), who also seek to attend weekly and assist in planning and leading the delivery of the program
Could you spare 30, 60, 90 minutes a week ? a fortnight ? a month ? a term ? ...
Do you have enthusiasm, patience ?
Do you want to learn new skills ?
Do you want to see activities taking place for young people ?
Are you any good at crafts, cooking, sports, music, hobbies... the list is endless - everyone is good at something.
Do you want to support the staff team and be part of the making a difference process...
No Company can operate without the support and time of some special individuals who help to take the strain
Door Duty / signing in (on rota)
Purchasing the Tuck from the Cash n Carry (perhaps 3-4 times a year)
Organise an Outing / Trip. Do you have what it takes to organise a trip/outing so say 10, 20, 30 or more people ?
and so much more...
Many people think they can't help, they have no skills, they put themselves down, think they couldn't possibly do it.
My advice is to set that video recorder, put that tablet/mobile down, give the couch a miss and give it a try - you never know until you try !
We are continually hearing of companies that close because there are no more leaders to lead.
And its a phenomenon that is affecting other youth groups too...
It seems that people don't want to give up their time anymore - so go on, buck the trend, make a positive contribution to your community... If you'd like to know more then please contact the captain via our email address; bbgb1stWootton@gmail.com
