What does gender equality mean?
Gender equality is when people of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities. Everyone is affected by gender inequality,especially girls and women.
GOAL No.5
Over the years, the world has gotten closer to achieving gender equality .
But still it's estimated that it will take another century before true gender equality becomes a reality.
These are the goal that the UN want to achieve by 2030:
End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls, everywhere;
Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls, in public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual, and other, exploitation;
Eliminate all harmful practices, such as early, forced and child marriages, as well as female genital mutilation;
Recognize and value unpaid assistance and domestic work, through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies.
Guarantee the full and effective participation of women and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.
Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights;
• Carry out reforms to give and ensure equal rights for women to economic resources, as well as access to property and control over land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance and natural resources, in accordance to a national laws:
• Increase the use of basic technologies, in particular information and communication technologies, to promote women's empowerment;
• Adopt and strengthen sound policies and applicable legislation for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, at all levels
To raise awareness about gender inequality issues,for examples some GENDER STEREOTYPES (gender stereotypes are social expectations attributed to sex at birth) or the domestic violence problem we did some videos that you can check out on our facebook page!
Obviously speaking of gender inequality, one cannot fail to speak of domestic violence
Gender-based violence is violence directed against a person because of their gender. Both women and men experience gender-based violence but the majority of victims are women and girls.
Domestic violence comprend behaviors used in a relationship by one part to control and manipulate the other one. The involved people can be married or not, be of the same sex or not, live together, separated or dating. We can all be victims of domestic violence. Victims can be rich or poor, of any age, sex, religion, culture, ethnic group, sexual orientation, education or marital status.
Inside the relationship it is difficult to notice but these are the dynamics that arise in a typical situation of domestic violence:
TENSION BUILDING: the abuser will often critic, judge the victim, whom will feel that something is wrong with him/her and he/she will try to not pissed the abuser
VIOLENCE ACT: there'll be the explosion of the tension, with intense aggression toward the victim
HONEYMOON PHASE: the abuser will justify his/her actions, saying sorry and that will never happen again
We had the opportunity to visit a project, called UNI +, inserted in the association Plano I.
This project has played an important role in prevention and action in this area, due to the different areas of action and intervention (through awareness and intervention campaigns with young people) and in support to the victims.
On that visit, we met Sofia Peixoto, a psychologist in this project, who explained to us how she carry out her work and clarified us about many theoretical foundations. It was a very positive sharing moment for the entire group present.
Sofia presented us all of her work and the important role of technical and specialized intervention in these cases.
Suffering from violence in intimacy is a real problem, it exists and we need to be aware of it. We are all active agents and we can save lives!
Projects like this are often a light of hope for many victims and we have to value all of their work.
THANK YOU SOFIA!
We volunteers of the project "Overcoming the Challenge" and SYnergia thank you for all your work and availability!
