LIFE ON LAND
This SDG aim is to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
A flourishing life on land is the foundation for our life on this planet.
We are all part of the planet’s ecosystem and we have caused severe damage to it through deforestation, loss of natural habitats and land degradation. Promoting a sustainable use of our ecosystems and preserving biodiversity is not a cause. It is the key to our own survival!
Forests cover nearly 31 per cent of our planet’s land area. From the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the food we eat–forests sustain us.
It is important to preserve the lungs of our earth for a lot of reasons.
Lost forests mean the disappearance of livelihoods in rural communities, increased carbon
emissions, diminished biodiversity and the degradation of land. All those are affecting the life of more than 1.6 billion people with 60 million of them depending directly from the forest for food, medicine and so on.
Human activity also affects the life of different species living on this particular ecosystem: The International Union for Conservation of Nature declared 15 species extinct just in 2020.
A recent UN report on biodiversity found that around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, many within decades, more than ever before in human history.
These numbers are mind blowing and unfortunately are rising day by day. That’s why our actions need to be focused, fast and extremely effective.
The increasing demand of protein and food in general generated by farming and intensive agriculture, due to, mainly, by the continuous rising of the population, drive us to an incredible land exploitation and also a disequilibrium of the wildlife generating a zoonotic disease emergence that permit to transmit the wildlife diseases to the people- as it happens with Covid-19.
Until now zoonotic disease emergencies cost us around 100$ billion, not counting the Covid-19 emergency which is expected to reach 9$ trillion in the next few years.
We can all do something to support and promote this SDG.
We can all change little habits that affect the planet and our environment. We can start recycling and upcycling. We can turn our diet to a seasonal based vegetable and fruit. Reduce the use of meat, especially red meat and start to buy food on the local market, supporting the local economy and reducing the pollution due to the transportation.
We can help through donations to local associations active in the environment and also volunteer with them. It is so important to share good and reliable information through our social network in order to raise awareness in the population.
