What is Screencast-O-Matic?
What is Screencast-O-Matic?
Screencast-O-Matic is a screencasting tool launched directly from a web browser. Also known as a screen capture, a screencast is a recording of one’s computer screen and typically includes either audio and/or video narration (Simon, 2019).
- Using a screencast allows viewers to intake information at their own pace by pausing and re-watching videos (Simon, 2019).
- Screencasts saves the teacher/creator of the screencast time, by not having to answer the same questions repeatedly (Center for Teaching Excellence, 2019).
- Provides an alternative way to represent or communicate information in a classroom.
- Screencast-O-Matic videos can be uploaded to a teacher's YouTube channel to easily share videos with students and/or faculty.
- Screencasts increase learner access by allowing students to obtain content from virtually any location whenever they need it (Center for Teaching Excellence, 2019).

- Screencasts can be used for tutorials, labs, training videos, recorded presentations, and video lessons for both students and faculty (Simon, 2019).
- Allows teachers to give audio/visual feedback on assessment pieces similar to a one-on-one conversation.
- Screencasts allow teachers to deliver content outside of the classroom if class time is limited (Center for Teaching Excellence, 2019).
- Teachers may use screencasts to assist substitute teachers with lesson procedures and details.
- Screencasts may be beneficial for students who are English Language Learners or students with learning accommodations as they can view the screencast multiple times and also include captions within the screencast.
