Grade point averages will be calculated at the end of 9th, 10th, and 11th grades. In addition, grade point average will be calculated after five semesters (junior midyear) for college planning purposes and after seven semesters (senior midyear) for mid-year reports to colleges. All courses are included in the GPA with the exception of Pass/Fail, withdraw pass/fail, and summer school courses which are included on the transcript but are not included in the grade point average. Calculations will be represented to the nearest thousandth.

Verona High School does not rank our students. Deciles will be used for a broader idea of student performance. For example, students who fall into the 1st decile are in the top 10% of their class. Students in the 5th decile are in the top 50% of their class. VHS will use seventh semester GPA’s for determining Verona High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian.

Grade Point Average is computed on the basis of cumulative points in ALL SUBJECTS with the exceptions of P/F grades, WP/WF grades, and summer school grades. The following numerical values are given to each letter grade for purposes of determining a student's grade point average.

Students who are enrolled in an Advanced Placement Course are required to take the corresponding AP exam in order to receive AP credit on the transcript. If a student chooses to not take the corresponding exam for any AP course, honors weighting will be applied.

In the event that a student in an AP or Honors course that has no lower level to drop into and already has a study hall in their schedule, he or she may audit the course, but must remain in the course for the remainder of the year. An audit of an AP or Honors class may only be accommodated until 5 days after Marking Period 1 Interim Grades are posted. The student will receive Pass or Fail grade, but will not earn any credit. Students may only audit one course per year.

A student who wants to drop a course after the level change date (5 days after interim reports), will need administrative approval and will receive either an WP (Withdrawal Passing) or a WF (Withdrawal Failing) on his or her report card and transcript. A students grade at the time of the withdrawal will determine the WP or WF.

Any level change after October 13, 2021 will result in grades transferring from the original course to the new course. Teachers will have discretion to incorporate previous grades when determining marking period averages.
