Attendance

Daily attendance is an essential component to the academic success of our students. In order to receive credit for courses in grades 9-12, a student's total number of absences must not exceed the following:

FULL YEAR COURSE 14

3 MARKING PERIOD COURSE 12

2 MARKING PERIOD COURSE 7

1 MARKING PERIOD COURSE 3

Students will have two days to make up assigned work for every one day they are absent. Adjustments to long-term absences will only be made due to a long-term illness. Following an absence of six or more consecutive school days, the student and teacher must meet within a period of three days to develop a makeup plan.

Non-Cumulative Absences: The Verona Board of Education permits absences from school for the following reasons:

NJDOE List of Religious Holidays Permitting Student Absence from School

* School sanctioned activities

* Court Subpoena

* Suspension from school

* Death in the immediate family

A personal illness accompanied by a doctor's note stating diagnosis and specific days of illness. This note must be presented to school within two weeks of said absence.

Three excused college visits per year. Documentation must be provided by the college.

Letters will be sent home through Genesis Parent Portal emphasizing the potential loss of credit due to excessive absences.

Reminder: Every three (3) tardies equals one cumulative absence. Students who are tardy to class and miss more than half the period will be charged with an absence in that course.
