Addition and Subtraction
Sums within 5 :
Your child should know what different combinations make numbers within 5. For example, to make 3, you can do 0 + 3 and 1 +2. To make 5, 0 + 5, 1 + 4, and 2 + 3. You can do this by giving them various manipulatives (counters, pens, buttons) and having them show different ways to make that number.
Plus and Minus 0, 1, 2:
Show your child a group of objects and ask what zero more than, one more than, or two more than that number would be. Do the same thing for subtraction. You can roll dice and ask your child the same questions. Avoid negative numbers though.
Combinations for 10 :
Knowing the partners of ten are one of the most important things you can do to help your child. Please see the addition page for some ways to help your child use the partners of ten.
