Jane from Box Cars and Education shows several easy versions of Face Off style card games that work on Key primary grades concepts of adding, subtracting, and place value. She also shows a lot of teaching strategies parents can use while playing the games with their children. The games use regular playing cards, something most families already have at home or can easily find.
Fishing for 10’s
Children need to know their partners of ten really well. In order to reinforce the partners of ten, play Fishing for Tens. All you need is a deck of cards or number cards for each pair of students. Remove the jokers, kings, and jacks from the deck. You won't need these cards. Queens = 0. Aces = 1. The game is based on Go Fish. There are two different variations of the game. The first video is a simple version. The second video has different rules and is a bit more complicated, but might be good for your more advanced learners as you can use three numbers to make 10 or use different operations.
Pick Up 10 / Memory Partners of 10
This game is played with a deck of cards and at least two players. Remove the kings, jacks, and jokers from the deck as they are not used for this game. After giving the cards a good shuffle, place them all on the floor in rows and columns. In Pick Up 10, cards are left face up and players rush to grab pairs of cards that add up to 10. The person with the most cards after all pairs have been taken is the winner. In Memory Partners of 10, cards are left face down and players take turns picking up pairs of cards that add to 10. The person with the most pairs when the cards have all been taken is the winner!
*Note that the Queen is
worth 0 and the Ace is
