Make A Dollar

Give your child an assortment of coins and ask them to make a dollar as many ways as they can. Afterward, show them any methods they missed! This activity is a huge help when students are just beginning to work with coins. Help your students see that working from the largest value coins to the smallest will help them not miss any combinations

Adding and Subtracting Money

With a whiteboard or piece of paper write an addition or subtraction number sentence horizontally to represent money amounts. Have your child calculate it using real coins to calculate the sum or difference. This activity could be made as difficult or easy as your child needs, but having physical coins to use helps them gain a better understanding of adding and subtracting money. You can make the activity more concrete by creating a store in your home with different price tags for certain items. Your child can purchase these items from you as the shopper or subtract from a money amount by being the cashier.Â
