App
A mini-program or tool that allows you to do a specific task. We are more familiar with these on our phones. Some of the items below can be downloaded as an app on your phone as well as be on your computer/Chromebook.
Add-On
Tools that are added on to a certain browser that enhance the experience of the browser. For example: add-ons in Google Slides can help teachers add different interactive activities to help with distance learning. Peardeck might be an add-on and extension that you will hear about. There is a math add-on that helps math teachers type in the different symbols and even fractions used in math equations. Too many of these can slow down the user’s experience.
Asynchronous Learning
This is a time when students may be working independently, or may be working on different things. Asynchronous learning may include assignments to review material or to apply known content in new ways.
Canvas
Canvas is a course management system that supports online learning and teaching; allowing teachers to post assignments and information. Canvas is like your course’s serving tray. Teachers will have access to google classroom, websites, and information on this page: a starting off point.
Extension
This is a way to personalize the experience in the Chrome browser. There are some things like Screencastify or PDF converters that teachers might put on their browsers to make it easier for them to prepare for their instruction.
Gmail
Gmail is the email that every student and staff have access to through the school district. Teachers will use this email to sign students up for Google Classroom and use for communication with the student.
Google Classroom
Google Classroom is a service that allows teachers to create, distribute and grade assignments. Teachers can share files and resources directly to students. Students can turn in assignments and files that teachers can comment on and edit to promote learning and growth.
Google Docs
Google Docs are like Microsoft Word. You can create documents. Will be used when students are creating writing assignments.
Google Drive
Google drive is a storage service through the Google Suite. Anything that is made in Google Docs, Google Slides or Google Sheets is also stored in the Google Drive.
Google Meet
Google Meet is a video conference. Students will be able to meet with their teacher virtually through a scheduled meet that has a specific time and password. Students will be given specific etiquette guidelines from their teacher. Basic guidelines are: camera on, mics muted, questions asked by chat or raise of hand, participants are respectful in conversations, discussions, and on the chat board.
Google Sites
Google Sites is a way to create and publish websites using Google.
Google Slides
Google Slides are like PowerPoint. You can create presentations to various degrees. During comprehensive distance learning, some teachers are using google slides as a virtual notebook where there are activities including: matching, quickwrites, note-taking, videos and articles to further thinking and learning can be stored.
Google Suite
Google Suite is a collection of apps from Google that helps you do different tasks such as creating a document, presentation, spreadsheet, or video conferencing.
You can access Google suite through Chromebooks by opening a new tab on chrome and then selecting the icon that is a grid in the upper right hand corner. It is commonly called a “waffle.” There are many apps within the suite but the ones listed below will be used the most.
Hyperdocs
A flexible way to communicate objectives and assignments from the teacher to the student. The student can collect learning artifacts (or assignments and projects) and store them in their hyperdoc. There are different ways that hyperdocs can be used: a folder in the student’s Google Drive, a student’s Google Site, and Interactive Notebooks.
Interactive Notebook (INB)
Interactive notebooks have been used in the traditional classroom before. These are your standard “comp. books” or notebooks in classes. Teachers make them interactive by having students glue items in, do assignments and collect the artifacts within the notebook. Many teachers during distance learning are using Google Slides as a way to utilize this idea of a notebook. Many are adding activities such as videos, click and drag activities, vocabulary, links to articles, etc. to enhance these digital notebooks to make digital learning interesting and interactive.
Stream
The announcement board in a Google Classroom. Once you click your classroom, this is the page you will see. Teachers can post announcements for the class. You can also see assignment links as well.
Synchronous Learning
This is a time when students are in class together. Synchronous learning may mean the teacher is giving direct instruction to the class, students are working in groups, or students are working independently on the same content.
Webquest
An activity that is inquiry based where students are given a task and the online resources to research their answers. Almost like an online scavenger hunt.
