Morning Meetings are an engaging way to establish and maintain a positive community. The purpose of Morning Meeting is to:
Set a tone for respectful and engaged learning in a climate of trust
Build and strengthen connections among students and between students and adults
Support academic, social, and emotional learning
Motivate students by addressing their human need for significance, belonging, and fun
The Morning Meeting Stockpile is organized by the four components: Greeting, Sharing, Group Activity, and Morning Message.
The Greeting is a positive way to begin your day as a class community and it supports students in feeling a sense of belonging as students are warmly greeted by name.
The Sharing component provides an opportunity for students to get to know one another while sharpening their thinking, listening, and speaking skills. Students are also able to develop valuable social-emotional competencies.
The Group Activity engages students in a short, spirited exercise designed to strengthen group bonds and develop students' social and academic skills. Activities range from playing interactive games, reciting a poem, dancing, or singing.
The Morning Message promotes a sense of community by sharing written information, smoothing the transition into the day ahead, and sparking students' anticipation for the day's educational adventures.
Teachers know their students best and should choose the components that work well on a given day depending on the needs of their students, content being taught, and time constraints. The ultimate goal is for students to feel motivated and have a sense of belonging, significance, and fun.
Getting Started
Teach and use a management signal to bring quiet and attention (ex.- silent hand raising, call and response, or chime).
Students join the meeting with empty-hands.
Planning
Plan the four Morning Meeting components to meet the SEL, developmental, and academic needs of your students.
Utilize these Daily and Weekly Morning Meeting Planning Templates.
Provide the opportunity for everyone to be heard and seen. Participation is optional. The feel of the meeting is invitational.
Aim for inclusive Sharings and Group Activities.
Build comfort, predictability, and safety for students by repeating the Greetings, Sharings, and Group Activities throughout the week and year. Repetition allows students to practice and build confidence with multiple Morning Meeting structures.
Management
Keep the classroom routine simple and predictable. Consider how you might involve students in the planning and facilitation of the meeting.
