iPE

Making PE individualized for every learner

What's Happening in

Adapted Physical Education?

What is iPE?

The nature of Blended PE revolves around ensuring students have more time for physical activity while in class. For my situation, I don’t have an assigned classroom for PE class so the gym is my classroom and my workout space. Traditionally, Blended PE includes online and traditional lessons, but in our case I use a combination of technology and traditional lessons to bring together health and physical education lessons for my learners.

To bring it all together, we take field trips which enhance what we’re learning in the gym/classroom and show students how lessons apply to every day life.

Students are prepared physically, mentally, socially, & emotionally

This is the VBCPS profile of a graduate. Our mission is to prepare ALL students, which includes my adapted physical education students. Here is how my class supports these learners:

  1. Communicators & collaborators - Our SOLs alone revolve quite heavily around social and emotional learning. Being able to teach our students how to express themselves and work with others is the cornerstone of my class.

  2. Knowledgeable - I want my students to understand why their health is important. For many of my students, they have not received adequate information about diet and exercise. My goal every year is for them to leave with a tool kit to take care of themselves.

  3. Resilient Learners - We take fitness tests; we try new sports; we do things that force my students out of their comfort zones. Sometimes they succeed and sometimes they fail but it’s my job to help them learn from each experience so they can come back and do better next time.

  4. Personally & Socially Responsible - Again, our SOLs focus heavily on this and in addition, it’s a goal of mine to help my students understand how they can contribute to their community and why it’s important to be a part of their high school class.

  5. Balanced - I offer my students opportunities to be a part of the overall Bayside experience. With our field trips, Champions Together program and Achilles Kids program I make sure my students are able to see there is more to life than just the walls that surround them at Bayside - especially since many of my students spend the whole day in the same room, except when they have my class.

We are committed to providing structured physical education for students of all abilities. Our APE class at Bayside HS focuses on helping students meet their individual physical goals as well as teaching them about health and fitness.

This course is designed to improve the health and physical well-being of students with disabilities. This course will provide the students with ways to exercise in order to enhance their physical well-being outside of class. The goal of this course is to improve the quality of life for students with disabilities, while also increasing each student’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Students will be introduced and take part in a variety of games, activities, life skills, and fitness activities all designed to promote health and wellness. Written into my curriculum is the ability to adjust and personalize each activity to best utilize each student’s skills. The teacher will also have the ability to work with each student’s special education case manager in order to provide the best learning environment for this course

Our APE students compete in two fitness programs above and beyond regular PE class.

APE Course Expectations

Achilles Kids is a running, walking, and rolling program for low income children with disabilities. This program challenges students to run, walk, or roll their way to 26.2 miles over the course of the school year. During the 2017-2018 school year our BHS APE students walked a combined 466 miles! In the 2018-2019 school year, our BHS students walked/ran/pushed themselves to over 500 miles. This year we are shooting for 700 miles!

Champions Together Unified Track and Field team is composed of eligible Unified Student Athletes (with intellectual or physical disabilities or autism) and eligible Unified Student Partners (athlete mentors). Unified Track and Field is not a substitute for Varsity Track and Field but is instead another team. Track events included will be the 100 meter Dash, 200 meter Dash, 400 meter Dash, and 400 meter relay (team running). Field events included will be the Shot Put (throwing), Softball Throw (throwing) and Long Jump (running/standing & jumping).

I believe that the opportunity to participate in education based athletics is a unique and important part of our culture. The need to teach the true lessons and values of interscholastic athletics to all students is important for growth and development. Our partnership with Special Olympics Virginia through the Unified Sports® initiative is a great opportunity for our Marlin Family.
