Student Leadership and Engagement
Students drive the sustainability agenda. They lead discussions, hold campaigns and run events throughout the year.
Student Union Environmental Officer:
The Student Union elects an Environment Officer each year to lead on sustainability and ensure that students are represented in this area of college life. This year, Ziggy Guldhoj is representing the student body on the CEAG committee, and leading a project on developing a student rewilding and gardening enrichment activity.
Student campaigns:
Students from the Carbon Literacy enrichment group campaign for improvements at college. In 2025, students campaigned to change the pizza boxes in the canteen, successfully convincing the team to replace these with a lower waste option.
Green week:
As part of the S7 partnership we run a Green Week every March to involve students from across the college in sustainability. In 2025 the theme was ‘Welcome to the Circular Economy’. Events included:
Students running a second hand Clothes Swap throughout the week
A talk from Claire Potter, Senior Lecturer in Product Design at Sussex University, on her work the Circular Economy
Staff and students planting a ten tree orchard on the college campus
A live stream talked on sustainable fashion by Amy Twigger Holroyd, Professor of Alternative Fashion Systems at Nottingham School of Art and Design
Green careers week:
Each year the college promotes Green Careers Week to students, encouraging them to consider how their knowledge and skills gained in all of their subjects could be used in careers that protect the planet. Speakers have included:
Sian Berry - Green MP for Brighton Pavilion
Andrew Finch - Green Film Maker
Kelvin Macleod - Rampion Wind Farm
Sophie Atkinson - Sussex Wildlife Trust
Ned New - Knepp Rewilding Foundation
Amber Cherrington - Sussex Dolphin Project
Tom Ziessen - The Environment Agency
