Carbon Literacy Qualification
The Carbon Literacy Qualification (CLQ) is a nationally recognised short course which provides an overview of the basic science of climate change as well as an understanding of the actions required by governments, businesses and individuals in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and set us on a path towards a more sustainable future. It covers how we can limit the damaging effects of human activity on the carbon cycle by using our influence and reducing our carbon footprint.
Varndean Sixth Form College was the first college to be awarded the Bronze status as a Carbon Literate Organisation. This is the visible 'badge' that shows we are both committed to Carbon Literacy and serious about maintaining our low carbon culture. We are the only college in the South East to achieve this, to date.
Carbon Literacy for students:
The course is offered to all Year 1 students as an enrichment option. Once they have achieved the qualification, students will be given support to complete their individual and group pledges. In 2025, 40 students successfully completed the course and were supported to campaign on issues such as heating and energy conservation in the college.
Carbon Literacy for staff:
As a certified Carbon Literacy Facilitator, Noami Lask has provided training for 3 members of SMT, who have used their pledges to make significant changes to the college campus, sustainability policies and procurement advice. In 2026 this training will be rolled out to more support staff.
