The role of a librarian has changed drastically over the last few decades, especially since the creation of the Internet and technology tools. The librarian is the information provider, the connection to resources, for students and staff. Their job is so much more than monitoring the exchange of books. As I’ve learned in my courses, they are responsible for maintaining a large, current collection of resources, staying current in technological applications, collaborating with teachers to extend classroom learning, teaching digital literacy skills, and provide ethical training and other professional development opportunities to students and staff. As my knowledge in the Educational Technology Library Science program continued to grow, I have a deeper understanding of the bond between technology and librarianship. With my profound commitment to the profession, I plan to always advocate for the library program, as I know how one can have a positive effect on the campus.

Writing the Collection Development Policy is something I'm sure to use in the future. I learned how important it is to have one in your library, especially since my previous campus didn't have one. This policy is the guide to everything that happens or could happen in the library. Without it, you're likely to be left "in the dark" when a problem arises.

To develop the collection of the library and keep sources up to date, the librarian must stay "in the know" of new and trending titles. Reviewing journals is one avenue to stay connected with news about popular resources. I enjoyed creating an orientation of myself for the board members. It allowed me the opportunity to share my vision, expectations, and goals for the library and working with other staff. Teachers on campus should view their librarian as a resource to extend classroom learning, and this assignment provides glimpse of my beliefs with others.

Developing my "dream library" was a lot of fun! I realized the importance of the accessibility of all patrons, having the collection area in a central location (able to see from all areas), and planning a functional setting of many zones. Students should view the library as a "Hub" that's versatile to meet the needs of all its patrons, not just loan books.

Reviewing the literature for children and young adults was a great experience in exploring more titles to share in the future. Prior to this class, I felt like I had a strong knowledge of children's literature, being on an elementary campus for fifteen years, but that feeling waned when I began working with young adult literature. It made me realize my need to expand my knowledge of resources for older children. Bottom line, as the campus librarian, one must be familiar with titles in the collection and know how to assist those in need. The librarian has to read, read, and read more to stay current.

When technology is integrated into the classroom, there must be acceptance from everyone. So often a new form of technology is forced on a teacher without proper training, and it's no surprise when the success fails. Everyone from the principal, teachers, and to the students should be accepting of the resources or there will be a lot of resistance. Working as a team, or developing a 'tech club' with learners could definitely bridge the gaps.

Prior to taking the course on cataloging and classifying resources, I had zero experience with the process and little idea of what was truly involved in the system. As patrons enter the library, as I learned in LIS 512, one of their first encounters should be an approachable librarian with a welcoming smile and warmhearted attitude that's ready and willing to assist. During this interview, I learned the value of effectively communicating information about the library's resources with students. Students and staff come to the library to seek the librarian's assistance, and they should be helpful in fulfilling requests while educating the users, too.

Reviewing the standards and rating of my current library reflects a need for improvement in many areas. As I've learned, although it's hard to face the negative reviews, it's even worse to ignore them. The library is an environment that services everyone and the librarian should use the standards to make it a retreat everyone wants to come and can't function without. I look forward to focusing on the weaknesses to develop my Capstone Project(s).

Vital Role of Librarians (Rough Draft)
Coming from a district that staffed a certified librarian on each campus, to working in a much smaller district that employed only one certified librarian to service three campuses, was a challenge and change that I continue to struggle to accept. After entering the Educational Technology & Library Science program I was reminded of the importance of acquiring certified librarians on all campuses. The role and value of a librarian seem to be under scrutiny. It didn't take me long to find my topic of research for this course, and I look forward to sharing the results of my findings.
