Step-Up Instruments

There are three categories we use to describe the various instruments the students play in band. Those categories are:

Beginner Instruments

Intermediate Instruments

Professional Instruments

Beginner Instruments are made to be durable. The materials are thicker and the craftsmanship is of lower quality. They are meant to take a beating as the kids learn how to care for their instrument during their first year or two of band. These instruments are great for getting students started, but there are limitations with these instruments regarding sound quality, note response, etc. It is possible for a student to purchase a beginner instrument and use it all through school, but they will not be as competitive as other students at the same skill level who happen to own better equipment.

Intermediate Instruments are what we typically refer to as a "Step-Up Instrument". They are made with better materials and are a cheaper option than professional instruments. The differences between a Beginner Instrument and an Intermediate Instrument are pretty significant. The differences between an Intermediate Instrument and a Professional Instrument are not as significant. While it is recommended to step up to an Intermediate Instrument if that is your only option, it is strongly recommended to skip the Intermediate Instrument and go with the Professional Instrument if you are confident that your child plans to stick with band for a long time. The resale value of Pro vs. Intermediate is significant.

Professional Instruments are made with the best materials and craftsmanship. It is recommended to explore these instruments after your child's first year in band. While you may not be able to hear the difference between the various levels of instruments, your child will feel the difference in their playing. The judges at All-Region Honor Band auditions, All-State, band camp, and more will hear the difference. Step-up instruments increase your child's chances of success.
