on UDL

I used to apply concepts of UDL, but I never explicitly spoke about it to my students -- pre-service teachers. What a disservice! Since then, I've read Dive into UDL by Grant & Perez as well as CAST's website on UDL. As a result of my recent studies during lockdown and through my ISTE certification experience, I've really taken a hard-look at how I can integrate principles of UDL into my work as an educator of future teachers. Not only have I created a matrix for my own integration, I've built in opportunities to explicitly teach UDL to my pre-service teachers!

My Three Favorites are the following:

Cast's comprehensive website on UDL: This requires a deep dive! Take your time and be thinking "How can I apply this?" I made the matrix below to force myself to think it through. I recommend this! Actually, in retrospect, I'm going to go back and come up with more examples as I only brainstormed one per section. My next professional goal is come up with one example per checkpoint.

UDL in 15 minute Podcast: I love this podcast! I binge listened to a bunch of these during quarantine and will continue to listen.

ISTE's Dive into UDL by Grant & Perez: This book is excellent! It's an enjoyable read that offers several applicable ideas and resources.

Here are the Changes I'm Making as a Result of my Studies

Optimize Choice & Autonomy

I will institute choice and autonomy in both edTech courses for ALL formative and summative assessments.

Offer Alternatives for auditory and visual information

I will provide video and/or audio support for all summative assignments. This will come in the form of either Youtube videos or podcast episodes.

Vary the Methods for Response

I will provide as many hands-on opportunities as the current climate (covid-19) allows. I will work to ensure that learning opportunities can be completed on a variety of devices (laptop, chromebook, phone).

Foster Collaboration & Community

I will create opportunities in both courses for flexible grouping as part of the digital sandbox philosophy in my computer lab. Because of social distancing measures, I will employ and demonstrate tools that allow for virtual collaboration (ie. GSuite, Flipgrid, & Wevideo). Additionally, I will construct communities of learnings by encouraging participation in various PLNs.

Clarify Vocabulary & Symbols

I will develop a vocabulary bank for both courses and pre-teach edtech vocabulary commonly used in school. I will provide hyperlinked definitions and visual support for terms when possible.

Use Multiple Media for Communication

I will compose media in formats such as group chats, discussion boards, and social media groups. I will also mix up the media I use for dissemination.

Facilitate Personal Coping Skills & Strategies

I will integrate models, checklists, and other adaptive strategies to help my students cope with online learning with technology. I will offer emotional support, coping skills, and strategies to develop a growth mindset with technology integration.

Guide Information Processing & Visualization

I will support transformation of information by creating interactive models that guide explorations while in the lab. I will provide explicit training videos while learning online. I will chunk instructional videos into smaller bits.

Enhance Capacity for Monitoring Progress

I will implement a weekly progress check for all my sections in some capacity. I will also implement checklists each week for my courses, both in person and online.
