The training that you will begin shortly is called "Student Training" in Canvas. However, Learning Coaches are to complete the training as well.
Students and Learning Coaches are encouraged to take the training together, if possible. The student should complete the module in the Canvas Student account. (The course is available in the Learning Coach's account as well, but completing the course in the student's account allows you and the student's teachers to track lesson progression and completion. In addition, some of the most important exercises only work in the student's account.)
Canvas training does not have to be completed in one sitting, but it does need to be completed before lessons begin. Pay attention to where you are in the onboarding period. This portion of your onboarding can take up to four hours. Be sure to pace yourself to complete everything that is provided.
Bookmark this page and return to this course after you complete the Canvas training. Students have to complete several important tasks in this course after Canvas training is complete. (Parents and students will want to work together on the tasks that will follow the Canvas training.)
Learning Coaches, after you and your child complete the Canvas training and final preparations for the student, you will have an opportunity to explore your Observer account. Extended Canvas Observer account training is provided at the end of Phase III as well.
Reminder: Everything that follows is to be done in the Student's Canvas account.
One of the first course cards that we place on the student's Dashboard is the Counselor's Corner card. The Counselor's Corner contains a variety of notifications and information from the grade level academic counselor.
Students (will) also have an Advisory course card along with the cards for their academic courses. The Advisory card provides important information about your Advisory teacher (similar to a Homeroom teacher) as well as school announcements.
When the student logs into Canvas in a few minutes, the Counselor's Corner card might be the only card on the Dashboard. If so, that's okay. Counselors are actively scheduling courses for our new students. The Dashboard will continue to update as courses are scheduled.
Both cards -- Advisory and Counselor's Corner -- provide access to your Canvas training. The card that you will use to access the training depends upon what is available on the student's Dashboard at this time. We explain how to access the training modules for either scenario (Advisory or Counselor's Corner card) in the instructions below.
The following instructions tell you how to identify the course card that will give you access to the Canvas training modules. Remember to refer to this onboarding course page every step of the way so you will know what to do. (You have to toggle or switch back and forth between this browser window and the Canvas browser window.)
Let's begin!
Log into the student's Canvas account. (You must be in the student's account, not the Learning Coach's Observer account.)
Look at the course card(s) on the Dashboard. Do you have an Advisory course card or do you only see a Counselor's Corner card?
If you have an Advisory card, click once on the Advisory card to open it, and continue reading this onboarding page for the rest of your instructions. If you do not have an Advisory course card, click once on the Counselor's Corner card to open it and scroll down this onboarding page for the remaining instructions to navigate in Canvas.
Students and Learning Coaches are asked to complete all of the Canvas training activities. They do not have to be completed in one day. Take your time, repeat exercises as required, etc.
The training will take three to four hours. So, pace yourselves and do not wait until the last minute.
All students are expected to complete the Canvas training modules. If multiple
After you complete the Canvas training, remember to return to this course to continue your onboarding. (Students have additional exercises to complete for the counselor and their teachers before courses can be finalized and lessons can begin. Learning Coaches have a significant amount of training to complete as well.)
The method for accessing the Student (i.e., Canvas) Training modules differs based on whether you use the Counselor's Corner card or the Advisory card. In addition, if the Counselor's Corner option is chosen, what you will see will depend on the student's grade level. Everything is explained below with screenshots and written instructions. Just look for the banner or button that is appropriate for the option you choose (i.e., Advisory or Counselor's Corner card) on the Dashboard.
