Investigating includes your interest, skills and talents, and the social analysis of the issue being addressed. You gather information through research: media, interviews with experts, surveys of varied populations, and direct observations and personal experiences.

Personal Inventory
Identifying an issue
Identifying a community need is important as we engage with service.
⚠️ A note of caution!
If we only look at needs, we are adopting a deficit approach to service. A deficit approach has us only considering "what is wrong" in the community.
An asset-based approach to service considers what already exists in the community that is beneficial and assisting this community to thrive. By finding assets before looking for needs, there is a likelihood of establishing partnerships that build on what is going well.
As we consider community assets, be certain to think about what comes from inside the community before what comes from the outside.
Service learning assists us to learn from and with others, and most importantly to replace assumptions and bias with accurate information.
💡Tip: With service learning you learn about others by asking questions, rather than making assumptions. This is a critical concept as you move to engage with community. Also, interviewing is a valued skill that can be applied in many learning situations. You can take the Personal Inventory process home to gather information from parents or other significant adults to hone their skills and provide human resources.
Use *MISO research method to add knowledge and insight on the topic/issue.
MISO is an acronym for ways you can collect information yourself about a topic. MISO helps you think about different ways you can interact with information to create your understanding and the thoughts of others in relation to your work.
Media – internet, television, newspapers, films, maps, and more
Interview – asking an expert
Survey – using set questions with people who have knowledge on a topic or for general knowledge or opinions
Observation, Experiments, and Experience – using our surroundings or memories of being somewhere, or creating an experiment or simulation
