Yolanda F. Roth, MD is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Her BS degree is from Ursinus College, majoring in Chemistry/Pre-Med, graduating with Honors in Fine Arts, and designated a Chapter Scholar (equivalent to Phi Beta Kappa at Ursinus in that era). Her MD degree is from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Roth’s professional training includes: two years of General Surgery Internship/Residency training at the University of Minnesota Hospitals; a three-year Clinical and Research Fellowship in Oncologic Surgery, Surgery Branch, NIH/National Cancer Institute--1978-1981 (the first female in this Fellowship), participating in cancer surgery and doing research into the immunotherapy of sarcomas and the pathophysiology of phantom limb pains and sensations; Orthopaedic Surgery Residency training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital—1981-1984 (being the first female to complete the residency program); a one and a half-year Musculoskeletal Oncologic Surgery, Clinical and Research Fellowship at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital; and a nine-month Total Joint Arthroplasty Fellowship at Orthopedics International in Seattle, Washington. Additionally, Dr. Roth obtained a background in the molecular cell biology and the pathophysiology of cancer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a one-year long professional education, Certificate Program, which included laboratory research into the molecular biology of sarcomas.
In the past, Dr. Roth was an Instructor on the full-time faculty, Orthopaedic Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and an Assistant Professor (civilian) on the full-time faculty, Orthopaedic Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, with past teaching appointments at Johns Hopkins Hospital, USUHS and George Washington University. In the past, Dr. Roth taught at USHUS in Anatomy for 7+ years (under Dr. Alan Seyfer’s course leadership) and as a facilitator in the USUHS Reflective Practices Course. She also did some teaching at Harvard Medical School using simulation mannequins as “patients”. Dr. Roth is a past-President of the former Washington Orthopaedic Society (served the Washington, DC, Suburban Maryland, and Suburban Virginia orthopaedic communities). In the past, she served on the Board of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (the female orthopaedic surgery society of the USA), having been a member of RJOS since close to its inception. At Ursinus College, Dr. Roth was awarded the Merck, Sharp and Dome Chemical Award (awarded to the graduating senior chemistry major excelling in the widest range of subjects and the premedical student with the greatest promise in the graduating class). As a graduating medical student from Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Roth was awarded the George L. Howland Award in Anatomy. Dr. Roth served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service while in the Surgery Branch of the NIH/NCI (1978-1981). Besides her strong academic interests and her academic, clinical faculty positions, Dr. Roth has also practiced as a clinical orthopaedic surgeon at the Washington DC VA Medical Center, at Kaiser Health System in Rockville, Maryland, has spent time in private practice in Rockville, Maryland and in providing orthopaedic care to an underserved community in Western Maryland. Dr. Roth is interested in orthopaedic/medical education, musculoskeletal oncologic research, and the use of medical and surgical simulators as a teaching aid in medical school and residency programs.
