The UT Health San Antonio Department of Surgery’s mission is to educate and train surgeons who transform the health of their patients and their communities: to perform practice changing research, and to provide innovative, comprehensive and high-quality clinical care while fostering diversity and inclusion. Our goals as a residency: 1. Provide a strong surgical educational experience with emphasis on clinical excellence, ownership of patient care, and developing strong team leaders. 2. Provide ample resources for academic productivity, developing identification with the surgical community and integration of professional and personal domains for optimal productivity long-term.
Please email GSResEd@uthscsa.edu if you would like to do an ADT rotation or civilian visiting rotation. You will still have to apply through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) system but we will reserve a space for you when you reach out. We can then arrange ADT through BAMC if desired.

Our surgery residency program has a history of training strong clinical general surgeons well prepared for practice but also highly competitive for fellowship training. We strive to provide a learning environment to foster leadership skills, graded independence, and the highest quality care for our patients. Our program benefits from a group of residents with diverse backgrounds and we are committed to providing an inclusive training environment.
We have nine categorical residents per year with two positions being reserved for the United States Air Force. The USAF positions are obtained through the military match and considered an active duty assignment with regard to military service accrual time. All USAF positions include one year of integrated research occurring between the PGY2 and PGY3 clinical years. As a large academic institution, we have multiple research opportunities within trauma, surgical oncology, surgical education, vascular and many more.
Our residency is primarily based at University Hospital and the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center with additional experiences at Christus Santa Rosa, Methodist, and Baptist Health Care systems. These facilities provide a broad base with exposure to all major specialties and settings to include academic and private practices.
We are immensely proud of our residents and their accomplishments. Please follow our residents on Instagram (uthsasurgresidents) or Twitter (@UTHSASurgRes) to get to know us! Thank you for your interest in our training program and please reach out to us with any questions.
To apply, please submit CV, personal statement, and unofficial USMLE score reports to GSResEd@uthscsa.edu by September 1st. Interviews will be virtual and will take place in late September or early October.
