Joanne Lenert, MD

Dr. Joanne Lenert received her BS in Engineering and Applied Science from Yale University (1980) and her MD from the University of Pennsylvania (1985). She trained in General Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh (1991) and in Plastic Surgery at New York University (1993). In 2001 she completed a fellowship in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (UT-MDACC). Following her husband, a Navy surgeon, to various locations around the US, she practiced plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, and UT-MDACC in Houston. In 2001, she joined the surgery faculty at the George Washington University in Washington, DC, where she practiced reconstructive plastic surgery, ultimately specializing in post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. She has received teaching awards from plastic surgery residents at the University of Pittsburgh (1995) and Georgetown University (2014). In 2015, she was awarded the Joseph M. Giordano Award for Humanism from the GW Department of Surgery. She has been chosen as a Washingtonian Top Doctor annually since 2005. She retired from her position as Clinical Associate Professor at GW in April 2023.
